Automation Technician is expected to be self-motivated, solution oriented and take accountability for actions taken. Expected to provide expertise with others and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness while on the clock. Expected to work outside in all weather conditions performing installation, troubleshooting, or other automation services for clients of Black Label Services. Expected to balance team and personal obligations and work long hours when necessary to reach goals or meet deadlines. Seeks out opportunities for growth and additional opportunities. Ability to adapt to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events. Automation Technician II is expected to be to work on time ready and prepared for the day’s work including proper attire and PPE.
As technicians progress through different levels, they accumulate skills and knowledge, ensuring they meet the requirements and expectations for each level. It's important to note that there are no mandatory requirements for techs to move from one tech level to another. Progression between levels is not obligatory, but rather serves as a valuable tool for managers and techs to gauge professional development and consider raises and compensation.
- Fully wire complex components, like Junction Boxes/Slaves and DC power distribution.
- Proficiency in battery wiring and bringing power into panels.
- High-level knowledge of device loop calibration.
- Proficiency in handling complex systems like ESD loops and relays.
- Understanding of dry vs. wet relays, wiring practices, and reasons for their use.
- Capability to lead Tech 1 technicians and apprentices.
- Ability to configure and test end devices, including HART configurations, device loop calibration, and radio communication.
- Proficiency in function testing and commissioning.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, including on call diagnostics.
- Navigate various program software relevant to their primary customer.
- Understand communication and configuration of end devices in the RTU.
- Basic IP setup for Ethernet devices.
- Proficiency in program navigation and changes.
- Compliance with updated BLS SOPs.
- Understand, setup, and troubleshoot modbus devices and wiring
- Develop strong communication skills within their team, with their supervisor, and with the company.
- Continuous professional development and industry research.
- Proficient in wiring complex components (junction boxes, DC power distribution, battery systems) to specification and best-practice standards.
- Expert in performing accurate device loop calibration, HART configuration, and end-device function testing.
- Rapidly identify, analyze, and resolve faults in ESD loops, relays, Modbus/RTU devices, and Ethernet/IP networking under field conditions.
- Skilled at navigating and modifying automation programs (RTU, SCADA interfaces), performing IP setups, and applying SOP-driven configuration changes.
- Clear and professional interaction with team members, supervisors, and client personnel; able to lead Tech 1 technicians and apprentices.
- Consistently apply company and industry safety standards (PPE, site-specific protocols) while working in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Thrive under changing schedules, extended hours, and evolving project requirements; maintain productivity in outdoor and adverse conditions.
- Demonstrate strong organization, thoroughness, and ownership of tasks—arriving prepared, meeting deadlines, and seeking growth opportunities.
- Attend or Complete required amount of trainings at BLS or otherwise.
- Completed Tech's Circuits training module
