Job description
Jupiter Volta Inc. is looking for a dynamic, ambitious, and hands-on Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and deploy high-performance systems for a novel plasma processing technology, with exciting new applications ranging from making fertilizer to generating fusion energy. As a member of our small but talented team of engineers and scientists, you will be ready to contribute to different areas of expertise as project needs dictate, and have the opportunity to enlarge your skillset to meet project needs. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a pragmatic approach, who is capable of working independently and incrementally towards ambitious goals via the application of foundational engineering principles. Our ideal candidate seeks a new mission-driven challenge, who will thrive in our team culture of innovation, excellence, and passion for changing the world.
Key Responsibilities:
•Design, install, test, and troubleshoot mechanical components such as flow nozzles, pumps and compressors, pneumatic and electric valves, chamber wall and window components, liquid cooled plasma electrodes, and coolant loop systems.
•Define specifications and manage manufacturing of components with external vendors such as vacuum pumps and high purity blowers, mass-flow meters and controllers, and motorized positioning stages.
•Develop and implement new configurations of vacuum, gas, and cooling water conveyance lines.
•Troubleshoot and seal leaks in vacuum and fluid handling systems.
•Troubleshoot and fix electromechanical issues in various components.
•Determine best equipment solutions taking cost, schedule, and performance into account. Modify off the shelf and used equipment to solve problems when appropriate.
•Design and install routing and mounting for cables, electrical components, and metrology devices like spectrometers and cameras
•Develop safety components like machine guards and EMI shielding
•Generate and execute testing plans for devices.
•Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists to evaluate the performance of prototype systems.
•Develop and validate ideas to improve system design. Perform problem solving and engineering calculation exercises to improve system capabilities to match requirements.
Desired Skills and Experience:
•Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other engineering education including expertise in design of physical systems.
•3+ years of experience in a dedicated Mechanical Engineering Design role
•Basic fabrication skills - e.g. bandsaw, drill press, lathe, welding, etc.
•Fluency in SolidWorks or another mechanical CAD package
•Knowledge of industrial/vacuum plumbing components such as NPT, push-to-connect, compression, VCR, KF, CF, ISO, Tri-Clamp
•Mechanical assembly skills
Bonus Skills:
•PLC programming, Python, C, Ignition Designer, Industrial controls, other programming skills
•Vacuum system experience (semiconductor equipment, etc.)
•Experience with rapid prototype procurement
•Experience in scientific device development or similar field
