Analytical and strategic support for the wholesale electricity market in Texas. Assists in analytics and research in support of the evolution of the wholesale electricity market in Texas. Works closely with teams monitoring system conditions and market performance to identify trends which may warrant market design changes. Works closely with both internal and external stakeholders concerning issues related to the wholesale market construct within the ERCOT Protocols. Applies principles of electricity market theory to understand and forecast market behavior and outcomes. Investigates methods for data analytics and visualization to develop improved analytical tools. Stays abreast of market evolution in North American and international competitive markets and applies learnings to the ERCOT wholesale market design. Generates and maintains market reports, communicating both technical assessments and strategic insights on market outcomes and future market design features. Assists the management team and senior experts in providing technical assistance to PUCT, industry and stakeholder groups as well as the general public. Models and assesses the merits of proposed changes to the ERCOT wholesale market design.

Market Intelligence Engineer/Analyst 1

- Demonstrates the skills and knowledge to provide analytical support for the wholesale market and grid operations

- Performs analytics with market data

- Develops and maintains knowledge of the wholesale market and ERCOT grid operations in order to support Market Participant business needs

- Assists in monitoring, forecasting, and analyzing the ERCOT wholesale market

- Assists in monitoring other markets, such as power futures markets and exchanges, to derive insights into external factors which may impact future ERCOT market outcomes

- Develops understanding and knowledge of competitive energy markets and trends in ERCOT as well as other North American and international competitive energy markets

- Generates and maintains market reports per request

Escalates issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager in a timely manner when necessary

- Develops strong working relationships with other internal departments

- Tests and validates changes to the applications used by the department members

Market Intelligence Engineer/Analyst 2 – Above +

- Proactively models, forecasts, and resolves future issues and opportunities within the ERCOT wholesale market and grid operations using power engineering knowledge and electricity market theory

- Processes ad-hoc and historical extract/report requests and ensures the data provided by ERCOT complies with Protocols, confidentiality rules, and data publishing rules

- Assists the management team and senior experts in providing technical assistance and strategic insight to PUCT, industry and Stakeholder groups, and the general public

- Attends stakeholder, industry, and PUCT meetings under the direction of the ERCOT management team

- Establishes proficiency in market mechanics, business processes and ERCOT systems

- Provides support to requestors on where to find and how to use supporting documentation on data extracts, records and reports

Market Intelligence Engineer/Analyst 3 – Above +

- Monitors and analyzes the ERCOT wholesale market and recommends market design modifications and enhancements as needed

- Monitors and analyzes secondary markets, such as power futures markets and exchanges, to derive insights into external factors which may impact future market outcomes

- Develops and maintains extensive knowledge of the wholesale market and ERCOT grid operations in order to support Market Participant business needs

- Develops extensive knowledge of electricity market theory and how it is applied in competitive energy markets in North American and international competitive energy markets

- Anticipates and proposes solutions to resolve issues within the ERCOT wholesale market and grid operations using power engineering and electricity market theory knowledge and experience

- Develops forecasts of market outcomes and future market participant behavior using either commercial power system economic modeling software or applications developed by members of the team

- Proposes and creates new solutions for data acquisition, visualization, and reporting for the purpose of informing strategic decision-making

- Attends stakeholder, industry, and PUCT meetings and provides input when requested

- Works independently and escalates issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager in a timely manner when necessary

- Performs engineering studies using the ERCOT network models to analyze conditions and events on the system and generates insights and strategic communications based on the findings of the studies

- Develops, tests and/or validates changes to applications developed by the department members

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

- Level 1 - No minimum years of experience required in excess of degree requirements

- Level 2 - Requires minimum 1 year job related work experience in excess of degree requirements

- Level 3 - Requires a minimum of 3 years of job-related work experience in excess of degree requirements

Salary and level will be based on overall experience as determined by ERCOT.

REQUIRED SKILLS

- Requires proficiency in programming languages like Python, database tools like SQL, and data visualization tools like Power BI

- Requires strong Excel skills for data manipulation, analysis, and reporting

- Requires problem-solving, communication, attention to detail, and critical thinking

- Requires knowledge of statistical concepts and techniques for drawing meaningful conclusions from data

- Knowledge of power engineering and electricity market theory preferred for entry level

- Knowledge of power engineering and electricity market theory required for entry level

EDUCATION

- Bachelor's Degree: Business Administration, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or related discipline (Required) or a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge to a major in such fields is required

Expected Salary Range:

$82,344 - $131,720
