The City of Wauchula is looking for a skilled and motivated Maintenance Mechanic to join our team! This hands-on role is responsible for keeping the City’s fleet and equipment in top condition – from heavy trucks and public works equipment to small engines and power tools.
The Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of vehicles and equipment. This position requires a thorough understanding of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and related components to ensure all equipment is operating at optimal performance.
This position is considered an emergency/disaster position, which requires the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

- Repairs and overhauls a variety of vehicles, light construction and maintenance
equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems with special emphasis on public works equipment.
- Overhauls and services assemblies and accessories, such as single and two speed rear axles, hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum and electric control systems and components.
- Repairs and overhauls generators, motors, pumps, cylinders, pistons, piston sleeves and bearings.
- Repairs and rebuilds trucks and other heavy equipment.
- Repairs and rebuilds small engine equipment; lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers etc.….
- Diagnoses and Troubleshoots vehicle and equipment issues
- Checks repairs before returning equipment to service
- Performs routine inspections and maintenance on all fleet vehicles, heavy trucks and equipment.

- Knowledge of automotive and construction equipment for repair and adjustment of gasoline/diesel motors; hydraulic components and systems, electrical and electronic/computerized controls, components and systems.
- Ability to perform and operate automotive type diagnostic and testing equipment.
- Ability to perform both gas and arc welding, with knowledge of various metals, heat ranges; ranges applicable to welding various metals, and proper rods to be used for various metals.
- Have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment needed for major and minor repairs of diesel /gasoline motors and diesel/gasoline powered equipment
Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of a valid Florida Driver License.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required and preferably supplemented by formal course work in the trade. Completion of a formal automotive repair training program; OR two (2) years’ experience as a mechanic or equipment service worker, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
