The Machinist Trainee, Lake Charles Refinery works in the Maintenance Department and is responsible for the repair and troubleshooting of rotating equipment within the facility. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and mandatory overtime. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.

Responsibilities May Include:

Performing any and all work for which they are qualified, related to repairing, altering, fabricating, removing, installing, assembling, troubleshooting and servicing a wide variety of rotating process equipment, such as pumps, compressors, motors, etc.

Performing close tolerance work on metal machining equipment such as lathes.

Maintaining and operating all equipment and tools to support and maintain required skills.

Sustaining a well-kept and orderly site in the performance of all work duties.

Working in a team environment and assisting other personnel in accomplishing tasks and major projects.

Climbing of equipment and the ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights is occasionally required as is the ability to work outside in all weather conditions.


Taking ownership for safe work practices.

Being able to read and interpret vendor equipment information.


Required Qualifications:

Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions


High school degree or GED equivalent

Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic


Valid driver's license

1 or more years of experience with rotating equipment including pumps, seals, fans, reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors, steam turbines and gearboxes in an oil refinery, petrochemical plant, or similar facility

Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:

Climb ladders and stairs (up to 50 feet) to perform equipment maintenance

Raise and transport articles weighing up to 50 pounds

Walk, stand, stoop, climb, sit, and carry material on a daily basis on even and uneven terrain


Work outside in harsh weather conditions

Travel as needed up to 15% of the time

Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (including but not limited to items such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection, fall protection)

Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Work unscheduled overtime including days, nights, weekends, holidays, etc

Occasionally respond to callout during off-hours as needed

Work around chemicals, including acids and bases that may be under high pressure and heat

Work around high and continuous levels of noise, vibration, extreme temperatures and hot equipment, hydrocarbon vapors, fumes and the potential exposure to refinery chemicals, including but not limited to, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, benzene, etc

Read and understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals in English


Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of a relevant apprenticeship or Associate’s degree

Proficiency in computer usage basics including Microsoft Office and SAP

Strong oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
