Summary:
As a Junior Commercial Buyer, you will learn the scrap metals business and selling process through a mix of training sessions and hands-on learning. In this position you will train side by side with experienced Buyers to support the ferrous and non-ferrous yards, as well as develop, manage, and strengthen new and existing relationships with our suppliers and customers. This position requires a dynamic individual with initiative, who can collaborate with all internal team members.
- Obtain a solid working knowledge of how ferrous and non-ferrous metals are received, graded, priced, processed and shipped.
- Monitor commodity market trends, review available trade publications, and complete market research to gain industry knowledge to help gain a competitive advantage.
- Maintain a list of industrial and commercial accounts producing scrap metal and contact on a regular basis to buy material (includes contact via phone and site visits).
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with scrap yards, brokers, dealers, and industrial accounts.
- Maintain good business contacts and favorable relations with current customers (scrap dealers, peddlers, and other suppliers) by regularly keeping in contact to assure meeting plant requirements for non-ferrous scrap metal.
- Traveling within a designated radius to engage with suppliers and evaluate their offerings.
- Review and ensure materials purchased are priced and coded correctly before payment to customers.
- Arrange economical transportation of material to the plant, ensure efficient handling of material (maintain strong communication and working relationship with transportation department and operations).
- Interact with scale operations to accurately input purchases across the scale.
- Provide monthly reports including estimated inbound volume, type and grade of material, and price structure for material.
- Enter and maintain internal software system supplier information and purchase contracts.

- High school diploma required.
- College degree in business or equivalent business experience desirable.
- Ability to identify, grade, and determine quality non-ferrous metals is required.
- Ability to identify, grade, and determine quality ferrous metals is preferred.
- Working knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Positive attitude, proactive, goal-oriented, self-starter, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Very strong interpersonal skills that will lend to a strong sales acumen.
