The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has openings for two Electrical Engineering Interns in our Electric System Integrity Department, located in Lansing, MI.
Position Summary
Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship
Dates: May 11, 2026 - August 07, 2026
Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour.
Electric System Integrity is responsible for engineering, designing and problem solving for the Electric Utility transmission, substation, and distribution assets of BWL.
Potential projects include system load flow planning, protection and coordination studies, electrical equipment review and specifications, overhead pole line and underground cable design, and substation control projects.
The ESI Intern will also help with material specifications, system planning studies for the BWL’s Strategic Plan, and system improvement sketches including voltage cut overs. The ESI Intern will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Electric Systems Integrity Department.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with the internal departments on various projects as assigned.
- Some potential projects available to the intern(s)
- Intern 1:
- Working with team members to learn distribution system planning, basic design tasks, and distribution standards and materials applications.
- The intern will be assisting with running planning studies and recommending various solutions to improve system reliability for our customers.
- Working with various team members to get experience with the transmission planning and system protection side of our business.
- This includes assisting with running various transmission planning studies and performing system protection studies and recommending device settings.
- Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
- Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
- Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
- Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System.
- Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
- Predictable and reliable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in an engineering program in electrical engineering with junior or senior status during the summer of 2026.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
