Position Summary

Operations Interceptors Interceptor Technician Interceptor Foreman SS/NS Interceptor Operations 5c-5 Under broad guidance, the Interceptor Technician is responsible for: Supervising two Interceptor Assistants in the servicing and repair of sewer mains & appurtenances and when working with the Interceptor crew; servicing and maintaining a large number of pumping stations; demonstrating semiskilled and skilled mechanical work involving responsibility for the daily servicing and maintenance of a large number of pumping stations; supervising one Interceptor Assistant when working with the Pump Stations crew; functioning as the assistant to Interceptor Foreman of maintenance crews of usually four-six employees; performing difficult maintenance and repair on Interceptor System force mains, gravity mains and pump stations; occasionally supervising the work of a small group of Interceptor Assistants when working with the Maintenance and Repair crew.

Examples Of Position Duties

Maintains the requirements of a registered apprentice Attends class, completes coursework (usually at least two nights per week from September to April) and required on-the-job-training Gives ongoing performance feedback of direct reports Vents entire force main system as scheduled Inspects and exercises system valves and air vents Installs pipeline and valve markers Adjusts valve boxes, air vents, etc. Inspects and services gravity sewers Inspects exposed pipeline crossings for condition Keeps appropriate records of servicing, inspection, and repairs in system Work with other maintenance personnel in clearing stoppages and other problems in system Investigate complaints or reports of problems in system Uses pressure recorders and gages Responsible for truck and equipment assigned to this position Supervises the efforts of Interceptor Assistants in a maintenance crew in a wide variety of activities, including cleans wet wells and siphon wells, cleans and clears stoppages in gravity sewers, makes repairs to gravity sewers and force mains, installs and removes pumps, motors, valves and piping in pump stations and treatment plants, paints pump stations and equipment Work includes various types of construction activities such as form and pour concrete, building construction, plumbing, etc. operates backhoe, front end loader and other heavy equipment as required Assumes duties of Interceptor Foreman in their absence Performs scheduled preventive maintenance functions at all pumping stations. Makes daily checks of pumping stations and siphon wells to determine that all pumps and supporting facilities are in proper working order. Checks to be certain pumps and automatic controls and appurtenances are functioning properly Pulls rags and other foreign materials from bar screens and wet well Makes periodic checks of alarm systems and auxiliary diesel generators to ensure they are working Repacks stuffing box, makes minor repairs, paints pumps, cuts grass and conducts general stations cleanup Keeps records and makes reports of service and maintenance activities Writes work orders for repairs required beyond ability Conducts supervised work activities based on specific instructions and schedules Informs supervisor of special situations and problem areas Performs general labor and physical activities as required Transports equipment as appropriate Carries standby phone on a rotating basis Performs other duties as assigned.

Adhere to the guidelines of HRSD’s Apprenticeship Program Manual Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions Ability to recognize problems quickly and use good judgment in locating the most appropriate guideline or practice to follow with little or no supervision to solve problems Ability to follow technical instructions, procedures and schedules Ability to perform mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and ratios Must have working knowledge of standard office equipment to include a personal computer Ability to operate heavy construction equipment Ability to follow instructions, procedures and schedules, both written and orally Must have comprehensive knowledge of sewer lines, valves, etc. Must have working knowledge of the plumbing and painting trades Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and related diagrams needed in the field Must have working knowledge of materials and methods used in various construction trades Must be able to plan/organize work and maintenance schedules.

Working Conditions

Must be able to work in varying climatic conditions outdoors; indoor work environment may be routinely hot, cold, misty, and/or unventilated; work involves exposure to hazardous materials and handling of wastewater Must be available to work overtime and/or unusual hours as necessary Must be immediately accessible by telephone in order to respond to emergencies according to a Standby schedule or as announced.

Physical Requirements

Must have the physical dexterity to accomplish the duties defined herein Must be able to identify colors used in work Must have the ability to walk, climb, stand, stoop, lift above head, pull, push, kneel, or bend for over 75% of time Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds Must have the ability to work from heights Must be medically certified to wear a respirator Must be able to work in OSHA designated noise environments (> 85 decibels) Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces.

Other

Medical certification of physical requirements may be required Must be currently authorized to work for any U.S. employer Must be able to secure and maintain appropriate access credentials for all government facilities subject to HRSD business

Experience

Required Completion of 100% on-the-job training skills, or approved equivalent as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee 2. Desired Experience in construction/repair of sewer lines; operation and maintenance of major wastewater interceptor system and pump stations; experience in general construction trades, including concrete work, carpentry, earth work, construction, welding and steel work; familiarity with and ability to operate heavy construction equipment, to include supervisory skills Training Levels This position is fully qualified at Grade 5, with experience and education as noted above. For those persons less qualified, the following training levels have been established: Grade 5a - Successful completion of 22 academic courses and 66% on-the-job training skills Grade 5b - Successful completion of 12 academic courses and 33% on-the-job training skills Grade 5c - No experience required

Special Licenses

Required Valid driver’s license from state of residence Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement must be obtained within 6 months of appointment to position. 2. Desired Class A CDL Permit

If assigned to a training level, fully qualified level must be consistently pursued, as a condition of appointment. Failure to do so will result in removal from the position and potentially employment with HRSD

Salary/Compensation: $49,927 per year
