Job Summary
The Fixed Equipment Engineer serves as a fixed equipment specialist for the site or designated business unit(s). This individual will use their expertise to guide the refinery on the assurance of fixed equipment assets, including the design, maintenance, and repair aspects.
Principle Responsibilities
- Provides fixed equipment (e.g., pressure vessels, piping, valves, and tankage) expertise as needed to support their assigned operating business team.
- Tracks mechanical fixed equipment reliability concerns and performs technical and economic analyses to justify improvements and long-term solutions and performs total life cycle cost analysis
- Performs reliability analyses for fixed equipment as needed (including analysis of failed items and recommending design changes to prevent repeat failures or extend run lengths)
- Defines fixed equipment repair, replacement, and upgrade scope based on inspection data, company and industry best practices, and incident learnings
- Supports the Unit Inspectors with ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement of equipment strategies, helping to ensure that all scoped inspection or repair/improvement work is has adequate justification
- Performs fixed equipment related assessments such as Level 1 and Level 2 fitness-for-service assessments, piping stress analysis, equipment rerates, in-service welds, and hot taps. Also reviews these types of assessments when performed by others. Serves as the site lead for Level 3 FFS performed by a 3rd party.
- Provides support for and review of calculations/assessments performed by the Unit Inspectors and/or other Engineers
- Reviews and improves site standards related to fixed equipment engineering design standards
- Provides fixed equipment input to the business teams to assist with “continue to run with a known deficiency” decision making.
- Defines scope and justification for required repairs or recommended changes to fixed equipment assets.
- Participates in and leads incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analysis
- Visits vendor and equipment shops, as needed, to verify technical design and repair quality of fixed equipment assets
- Responds to plant operational events and provides engineering support as needed for daily operations
- Coordinates engineering activities with other discipline Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) as needed
- Drives fixed equipment documentation management and drawing accuracy
- Leverages fellow engineers and PBF Energy’s technical networks for support as needed
- Mentors fellow Fixed Equipment Engineers in competent areas
- May serve as a discipline subject matter expert for site or company standards as assigned by the Mechanical Integrity & Reliability Manager
- Addresses IMPACT and Management of Change (MOC) actions in a timely manner
- Delivers technical support with a goal of improving overall equipment reliability
- Follows and promotes the site’s Loss Prevention System (LPS) and ensures all engineering activities are safety focused
- Drives site asset improvement in safety, reliability, environmental performance, and efficiency
- B.S. Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Strong engineering and analytical skills

- Understanding of engineering drawings and P&IDs
- Working knowledge of industry codes (API, ASME, etc.)- 5+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience preferred
- Ability to manage a large workload and changing priorities
- Understanding of fixed equipment design, construction, and operating principles
- Understanding of refinery equipment failure modes, corrosion mechanisms, and inspection techniques
- Understanding of refinery business drivers and the use of Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA)
- Understanding of risk based decision making, risk assessments, and available tools and resources
- Good working knowledge of MOC processes, as well as Engineering, Inspection, and Operations procedures
