Position Description Overall roles and responsibilities
Reporting to the Vice President of Sales, the Field Engineer is responsible for performing field inspections of customer wellhead equipment using optical gas imaging (OGI) technology to detect leaks, gather data, and create actionable reports. This role requires translating technical findings into clear, value-driven presentations for customers and collaborating with internal teams to recommend corrective actions and solutions.
Essential Functions

- Serve as the primary point of contact between APC Sales/Operations and the Customer for leak detection initiatives.
- Conduct on-site wellhead inspections using OGI cameras and other diagnostic tools to identify gas leaks.
- Collect, document, and analyze inspection data, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations outlining findings, including quantified leak data and potential safety/environmental impacts.
- Develop and deliver value propositions to customers, explaining problems, risks, and proposed solutions.
- Work closely with engineering, operations, and sales teams to develop customer-specific recommendations and quotations.
- Track inspection results, follow up on corrective actions, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable industry standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines for fugitive emissions.
- Travel regularly to customer locations, sometimes on short notice.
- Sales forecasting, demand planning, and scheduling to align inspection results with customer needs and internal resource planning.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
- Work is performed both in the field (customer well sites) and in an office setting for reporting and presentations.
- Fieldwork involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, and typical oilfield hazards.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as specified by company and customer HSE policies.
- Frequent travel is an integral part of this role; the successful candidate must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with company and customer requirements.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs, and carry field equipment.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Requires close vision, depth perception, and ability to focus for detailed visual inspections.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full-time position; hours typically Monday through Friday but may require after-hours and weekend work depending on customer needs.
Travel
Significant travel required to customer sites (50–70% of time).
Qualifications And Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, or related technical discipline.
- 2–4 years of oilfield experience (wellhead operations, production equipment, or field services preferred).
- Technical proficiency with inspection tools, data logging systems, and MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret technical data.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to interact with customers professionally.
- Comfortable working independently in field environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Experience with optical gas imaging cameras (e.g., FLIR GF series) and leak detection technology.
- Familiarity with API, EPA, or state-level regulations related to emissions compliance.
- Sales, technical service, or customer-facing experience in oil & gas industry.
- CRM system experience (Salesforce or similar)
