Job Description

We are innovators and problem solvers, and this role is no different. We need someone comfortable working with complex, dynamic systems – both our own, and of the wild world we live in. This involves challenges (power and data outages beyond our control, hard-to-reach devices in need of updating, unexpected user requests) and opportunities (access to diverse technologies and the ability to observe equipment in the field and chart the future of operations at UP). We need someone willing to start from the basics, put the work in, and aim high.

We are looking for a Field Operations Specialist to join our team in Vancouver, BC. This is the perfect opportunity for an ambitious and motivated person familiar with electronics to get started in a scaling start-up that has significant traction in Vancouver. The role includes the following activities:

•

Supporting our deployed systems at customer sites throughout the lower mainland. This includes both remote troubleshooting and on-site work. Our customers include Residential and Commercial multi-unit-residential buildings.

•

Understanding the hardware and software of multiple connected power and communication devices as a system.

•

Using web interfaces, command line tools, log files, physical probes, and other digital, electrical or mechanical methods to test system components in the field.

•

Diagnosing hardware and software problems and correcting them, such as by reconfiguration, update, replacement, or cooperation with other team members.

•

Travel to customer buildings in the GVRD (must have a Class 5 Driver’s License and vehicle).

•

Developing and scaling our network operations centre to support deployed products.

•

Continuing improvement of your skills, product knowledge, and workflow including identifying opportunities for tool improvements and automation.

Required Qualifications

•

The ability to quickly respond to situations, apply innovative approaches, and think on your feet. A strong operational sence of urgency is critical for sucess in this role.

•

Ability to operate with limited supervision.

•

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

•

Natural technical skills and the ability to figure things out.

•

Able to recognize and identify faults in electronic components.

•

Basic understanding of micro-controllers and embedded devices such as Arduino

Preferred Qualifications

We are not selecting based on what you have done, but rather on what you will do. That said, having any of the following would be an asset:

•

Understanding of building electrical systems.

•

Some understanding of network operations and building automation.

•

Experience working with customers - either through sales or support (retail counts!)

•

Experience in a combined hardware and software company, or a start-up.
