GENERAL SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Engineering Technician will coordinate on project engineering and design; product/process research; field technical support; and support of the utility system. The incumbent will gather and track standards and manual feedback, and work on special projects as assigned. Support department process and change management and frequently coordinate with other internal departments on assigned tasks and projects.
- The Engineering Technician position will be based in our Livonia or Howell, MI service center. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate. Approximately 20% travel within the Michigan service areas will be required based on business needs.
- This position is in the Gas Engineering Planning & Supply (GEP&S) / Gas Engineering & Planning (GEP) / Distribution Pipeline Engineering (DPE) department and will report to the DPE Design Supervisor. DPE is responsible for designing and preparing Gas Distribution Pipeline work orders for the construction of major system improvement work. This includes Civic Gas Main and Service Relocations, System Augments, Enhanced Infrastructure Replacement Projects, New Business projects, Further Actions Notifications, and other programs that support the goals and objectives of the Gas Engineering Planning & Supply (GEP&S) department.
- Support Storm Restoration activities when called upon
- Support special assignments that may not be directly related to project work. Examples might include odorize engineer, field support engineer, specifications and process development, etc.
- Complete on-the-job learning and development via learning modules, standard review, and mentorship via senior engineer
- Perform field visits and work with field operations, as needed
- Provide engineering support and consultation to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, schedules, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation
- Understand and follow existing, and create new, department standards and procedures. Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project, and be able to utilize the information appropriately
- Support and administer the maintenance of configured infrastructure to meet current utility needs. This includes implementing levels, specialized components, and custom reports
- Meet with third-party supporting firms and general contractor representatives to provide standards and collect feedback on a recurring basis to ensure up-to-date understanding and compliance
- Read and interpret utility industry standards, drawings, and device specification/data sheets, and apply them to a working environment
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
- Proficiency in using ArcGIS and/or CAD software

- Associate degree in Engineering or a related field and two (2) years of experience performing technician work
- (OR) High School Diploma and four (4) years of experience performing technician work
