We are currently looking for an Engineer, Protection and Controls to join our Energy Delivery team in a permanent position. The successful candidates will join Nova Scotia Power’s team of dedicated professionals, whose goal is to exceed our customer’s expectations in delivering reliable and cost-effective energy and services. You will be required to work closely with members of the team to prepare plans, designs, calculations, cost estimates and bills of materials for a variety of projects. These tasks will be completed in accordance with established codes, standards, engineering practices, and specifications. You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
Key Elements Of This Role Include
As a P&C Engineer experienced with the design and operation of electric utility P&C systems, you are responsible for the following:
•Preparation or review of P&C detailed designs for transmission lines, substations and generators
•Developing design protection philosophy requirements
•Preparing or modifying AC & DC schematics, single lines, wiring diagrams, and panel arrangements
•Protective relay selection and settings preparation
•Preparing scope of works and specifications for procurement and installation of P&C systems
•Performing calculations such as short circuit, CT burden and saturation, voltage drop, protection settings and coordination studies
•Ensuring quality and completeness of P&C engineering packages and approving these packages to be issued for construction.
•Preparing bill of materials for procurement of P&C equipment
•Providing technical support during installation and commissioning of P&C systems
Required Qualifications
These skills will make you successful:
•Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
•Professional Engineering license (P.Eng) in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia, or eligible for transfer or in the process of obtaining Professional Engineering license (P.Eng).
•3+ years of experience in Protection and Controls design and engineering
•Knowledge of Protection and Control theory, principles, practices, standards (IEEE, NERC, NPCC)
•Experience with protection schemes for transmission & distribution systems
•Experience with transmission and power production substations.
•Experience with Schweitzer & GE digital relays and auxiliary protection equipment.
•Experience with substation primary equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, reactors

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
•Office environment with periodic field visits to substations and facilities.
•Valid driver's license required.
•Ability to work in various weather conditions when necessary.
•May require response to after-hours emergencies.
