EPCOR Water Services (EWS) is hiring a full-time permanent



Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Mechanical


to join our Engineering & Technical Services team. This position is based in Edmonton and supports the Rossdale and E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plants.


In this role, you’ll be responsible for the mechanical assets across our water plants, reservoirs, and pumping facilities. You’ll provide mechanical engineering expertise and deliver both conceptual and detailed engineering designs for capital and operational projects. Your work will also support the enhancement of maintenance strategies, lead engineering investigations, and contribute to the development of mechanical standards and specifications.


Projects typically span from 3 to 12 months, offering a variety of hands-on experience. In addition to core responsibilities, you may also support broader Operational Excellence initiatives, such as Energy Management and the Management of Change process for the water treatment plants.

you are accountable to the


Water Engineering Manager

and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):


Support the development and execution of 3–


12-month

engineering deliverables aligned with the Plant Asset Engineering strategy and business plans.

Contribute to long-term planning, including five-year capital plans and annual budget cycles, by identifying mechanical project needs and associated costs.
Develop, implement, and maintain Mechanical Engineering standards and processes to ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and risk mitigation.
Provide mechanical engineering expertise for capital and operational projects, including design, specification, and procurement support.
Review engineering drawings at all stages—conceptual through to as-built—for accuracy and alignment with existing systems and standards.
Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., PMO, Commercial Engineering, Operations & Maintenance) and external consultants to deliver effective mechanical solutions.
Offer technical support to Operations & Maintenance teams, including timely root cause failure analyses to restore equipment and maintain plant operations.
Manage external engineering resources and ensure the application of sound engineering principles in resolving facility issues.
Maintain strong working relationships across Plant Asset Engineering and EUI to ensure alignment and effective collaboration.

with APEGA or eligible for registration + If not already registered as a



Member


-in-Training

with APEGA must be registered within 6 months of hire date.


Experience and Qualifications

Up to five years of experience in engineering design, with a focus on mechanical systems.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective, practical solutions within the mechanical discipline.
Knowledge of fluid mechanics, ideally in one or more of the following areas:
+ Pumping and piping systems + Piping layout and design + Hydraulic design and modelling + Building systems design + Materials science + Engineering economics

Proven Abilities:

Delivering designs that add value, meet safety and performance standards, and align with company goals
Providing mechanical engineering expertise and technical direction
Planning and organizing work and teams to meet schedules and quality expectations
Conducting cost-benefit analyses to support decision-making
Presenting technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences and building consensus
A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License
+ Maximum of 6 demerits at the time of hire (past unsafe driving behavior may result in non-selection regardless of current demerits)

. + GDL license holders may be considered (maximum 3 demerits and subject to driving behavior review)

. + Access to a reliable vehicle for business use

This is a professional-level position that typically operates Monday to Friday, totaling 40 hours per week.

From

Home program. It is an office-based position that requires occasional travel between sites and to reservoirs as needed. The successful candidate must have access to a personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage, in accordance with EPCOR’s Employee Mileage Reimbursement Policy. Mileage will be reimbursed as per the terms outlined in that policy.
