This position can be hired as either an Engineer I or Engineer II depending on experience

Position Summary

The Engineer I/II position is the entry level and intermediate levels, respectively, of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I/II position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I/II is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I/II has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

This position is for an Electrical Engineer on our Substation Engineering team located in Duke Energy’s regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, OH. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. The final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include:

- Single Line Diagram review and approval

- Material Ordering from long lead major equipment to individual connectors

- Preparing specifications for non-standard equipment

- Ground grid engineering

- Lightning protection engineering

- Below grade conduit engineering

- Conductor and connector sizing

- Drawing review for assigned projects

- Engineering support during construction

- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.

- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.

- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.

- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

This position can be hired as either an Engineer I or Engineer II depending on experience

Required Basic Qualifications

Engineer I

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

Engineer II

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

- 2 years minimum required related experience

Desired Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering

- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

- Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

- Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

- Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

- Experience in the Electric Utility Industry.

- Experience in electric utility substation design.

- Experience with Microsoft Office

- Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer

- Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor

- Experience with WinIGS

Additional Preferred Qualifications

- Understanding of basic Civil Engineering theories and principles.

- Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

- Good written and oral communication skills.

- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

- Understanding of basic principles of project management.

- Experience in electric utility industry

- Experience in electric utility substation structural designs

- Experience with Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) designs

- Experience with site development and storm water runoff designs

- Experience with Microsoft Office

- Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer

- Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor

- Experience with Mathcad

- Experience in Civil 3D

- Experience with structural modeling software such as RAM Elements, STAAD Pro, or similar

- Experience with LPILE foundation design software or similar

- Experience with structural design codes such as ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE MOP 113

- Demonstrated ability to complete structural steel and reinforced concrete designs

Working Conditions

- Some travel (<10%) outside geographical area.

- Office environment with frequent site visits, in various weather conditions.

- May need to work in confined spaces and/or in noisy work areas. Exposure to potential hazards is commonplace.

- Exposure to hazards is commonplace. Hazardous areas routinely encountered include open ditches, heavy machinery, excessive noise, vehicle traffic and high voltage equipment.

- Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements

- Able to drive personal vehicle or company vehicle.

- Must have the ability to walk extended distances on various types of terrain.

- Must have the overall stamina and ability to perform moderate physical activity.

- Must have the ability to audibly and visually identify the presence of a danger or hazard.

- Support for Delivery Operations during emergency storm restoration, which could require extended hours working outdoors in any weather condition.
