Engineer II-

is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied

As part of the Nuclear Corporate Plant Engineering Support, Corporate Inspection Programs Group, this position is responsible for providing various inspection program engineering services for the nuclear fleet. The Programs specific to this role include the ASME Section XI Inservice Inspection (ISI) and Augmented ISI Programs, ASME Section XI IWE/IWL Program, and ASME Section XI Repair/Replacement (R/R) Program.

This position reports directly to the Manager of the Corporate Inspection Programs Group in the Nuclear Corporate Office.

Inspection programs are designed to comply with regulatory and industry requirements and operate nuclear plants safely, effectively, and economically. Inspection programs use risk and knowledge insights to specify locations and methods of nondestructive examination (NDE) to assess plant conditions. The objective is early detection of material degradation. These programs also develop short- and long-term strategies to manage degradation detected. These strategies can include additional examinations, repairs, or replacements. Program engineering services involve a wide range of activities including, but not limited to the following:

Working with external organizations to foster a business environment conducive to operation of nuclear power plants as long term, carbon free enterprise assets using engineering programs.

Advocating for and implementing technically sound solutions that maintain the pressure boundary integrity function, safety, and reliability of nuclear plants
Working closely with the nuclear sites and industry groups to develop and maintain inspection and testing programs and plans in accordance with applicable requirements
Preparing and maintaining program documents in accordance with appliable industry requirements and best practices, including periodic updates.
Reviewing and certifying Work Order documentation in accordance with ASME Section XI Repair/Replacement requirements.
Preparing the periodic Program health report. Make periodic presentations to Station and Corporate Leadership on program health, industry issues, and changes in regulatory requirements and guidance.
Preparing regulatory submittals such as relief requests and alternative requests for submittal to the NRC.
Acting as lead for regulatory or other industry interfaces (e.g., NRC, INPO) including coordination of responses to NRC findings, INPO Areas for Improvement (AFIs), and Oversight findings.
Implementing best practice solutions across the nuclear fleet to leverage successes
Participating and/or leading activities designed to improve engineering programs, such as assessment and benchmarking activities or fleet working groups.


Responsibilities

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and drawings associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.


Working Conditions

Hybrid Office/Remote Work Environment - primarily general office, secondarily plant environments. Candidate can sit at the Duke Energy Plaza or any of the other Nuclear sites (BNP, CNS, MNS, ONS, HNP, and RNP)
Flexible work schedule - typically four 10-hour days, 2 in office and 2 remote
Some travel to other Duke sites, industry sites, and industry conferences/meetings
Occasional off-hour emergent work required to support plant outages and emergent problems.


Basic/Required Qualifications Nuclear Engineer I

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.


Nuclear Engineer II

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
2+ years Nuclear or related engineering experience


Desired Qualifications

B.S. Civil, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering
Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
ASME Section XI experience
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Successful completion of the Engineering Fundamentals Examination
Experience in the utility industry or power plant systems and components.
Experience with Nondestructive Examination (NDE) methods, such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Experience or assignment working at a nuclear plant site.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities
Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments.
Experience with general computer skills including Windows, e-mail, PowerBI, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).
Experience with Inservice Inspection Software Applications such as IDDEAL Software Suite ®.
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization.


Specific Requirements

Nuclear Plant unescorted access
This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
Occasional overnight travel. (5-10%)
