What is an Engineer - Gas Standards?
A Gas Standards Engineer works in the Gas Engineering department and is responsible for modifying and keeping the Gas Construction Standards and Gas Operation and Maintenance manuals of the company current, while meeting or exceeding all industry guidelines, standards, codes, rules, and regulations. This role interacts and works closely with field crews, supervisors, administration, and management as well as with drafters and purchasing personnel to ensure that changes and modifications are made in a timely and effective manner.
What does an Engineer - Gas Standards do? Typical Assignments Could Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Develops and updates Gas Construction Standards, Pipe Joining Guidelines, and Operations and Maintenance procedures. This can include formatting, scheduling review meetings, and collecting input across multiple departments.
- Develops new Gas Construction Standards and Operation and Maintenance procedures
- Enhances and automates natural gas safety and compliance processes
- Analyzes and optimizes the inspection and maintenance of the gas transmission and distribution system
- Interfaces with the Department of Public Service Staff regarding Central Hudson’s gas system activities
- Analyzes and develops alternate source specifications for material for capital projects
- Analyzes and provides expert opinions for the evaluation of material failures
- Reviews and audits inventories for obsolescence
- Provides technical support for the field capital inspectors, construction crews, supervisors, and designers
- Oversees research and development projects to improve the efficiency and environmental footprint of the natural gas system
- Provides support for storm or gas emergency restoration efforts
What does it take to be an Engineer - Gas Standards?
Required- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil or electrical engineering
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
- Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
- Dedication to continuous improvement
- Initiative to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
- Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
- Well-developed written/verbal communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with innovation in mind
- Strong analytical, organizational and quantitative skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience working in the regulated utility industry
- Experience in technical and procedural writing
