About This Job

POSITION PURPOSE

Perform supply and trading functions for the Company related to energy procurement for physical and financial gas and power transactions. Functions include procurement of gas and electricity to serve customer load, dispatch of generation units in the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO) market, short-term and mid-term optimization of gas and electric assets, and implementation of the Company's Risk Management Plan activities.

Duties And Responsibilities

•

Develops and implements daily and monthly electric strategy for buying load and selling generation into the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market.

•

Coordinates daily and monthly market activities for jointly owned power plants and Power Purchase Agreements.

•

Monitors, adjusts, and implements both power and natural gas strategies on a daily basis as appropriate to take into account market changes.

•

Coordinates daily and monthly natural gas supply for generation with Dispatch Analyst.

•

Participates in other MISO market activities such as auction revenue rights/financial transmission rights, virtuals, and capacity auctions.

•

Maintains in-depth knowledge of the MISO tariff and Business Practice Manuals, Public Service Commission rules and requirements for energy procurement, and any other regulatory issues that affect energy procurement including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, North American Electric Reliability Corporation, and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Acts in compliance with market rules at all times.

Participates in developing and implementing the Company's hedging plan under the Risk Management Plan to manage risk associated with natural gas and electric market price exposure.

•

Develops information for and monitors the results of the Company's Electric Fuel Budget.

•

Continually monitors physical and financial natural gas and power markets and participants to determine opportunities for purchases and sales, optimization of Company assets, and potential issues with suppliers regarding credit.

•

Provides daily and weekend support to ensure seven-day, 24-hour coverage in monitoring the gas system load and electric transactions as part of the departmental on-call rotation.

•

Generates all analyses, confirmations, and appropriate documentation to provide complete and accurate support for trading activities.

•

Establishes and maintains contacts with counterparties including trading partners, joint plant personnel, utility personnel and other gas and power information sources for procurement, scheduling, and reconciliation.

•

Participates in state and federal regulatory issues as directed.

•

Maintains working knowledge and compliance with the Company's policies and procedures including fuels procurement procedures, risk management programs and credit policy.

•

Serves as a backup for others in the department to ensure coverage of important tasks.

•

Maintains a good working knowledge of the Company's tariff to recommend changes as appropriate to ensure the Company's objectives are maintained.

•

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

•

Bachelor's degree in economics, business, mathematics, accounting, engineering or other related fields or equivalent.

•

Two to five years of experience in the power-trading industry.

Knowledge And Skills

•

In-depth knowledge of natural gas and power market fundamentals.

•

Strong analytical skills.

•

Good understanding and working knowledge of hedging principles and risk management concepts.

•

Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and adapt to changes in priorities.

•

Able to quickly and accurately process and interpret large amounts of data.

•

Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.

•

Able to interpret, analyze, and implement various pipeline and power tariffs.

•

Good understanding of computer software including, but not limited to, PCI, spreadsheet development and word processing applications.

•

Able to work independent of day-to-day supervision of daily tasks in areas requiring a great deal of accuracy, detailed analysis, and interpretation using industry knowledge.
