Operations Manager: Federated Rural Electric Association (FREA) is a midsized electric utility and broadband service provider located in southern Minnesota in the city of Jackson.
Located along Interstate 90, Jackson is nestled in a valley of the West Fork of the Des Moines River, just 20 minutes away from the beautiful Iowa Great Lakes area and within two hours of multiple major cities.
Established in 1935, Federated provides electricity to 5,300+ member-owners and 7,000 metered accounts across Jackson and Martin counties. We also provide broadband services across multiple neighboring counties, delivering reliable broadband internet to customers in southwestern Minnesota.
We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead our line-crews and field operations for our electric utility distribution system.
In this role, you will supervise and direct the construction, maintenance and operation of the Cooperative’s distribution lines, ensure sound construction and engineering practices, and lead a team of contractors, mechanic/warehouse staff, the Line Superintendent, Foremen from two locations and the line workers. You will ensure adherence to all established safety rules and best work practices.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the long-term work plan for the best performance of our system and long and short-term goals for personnel, facilities, equipment and supplies. Your team is responsible for working with members on any enhancements to their service to best meet their needs.
The successful candidate will have a vast knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including substations, metering, system protection, transmission systems and interconnections. We are looking for a continuous learner ready to collaborate with office colleagues and external partners. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, combined with an attention to detail and accuracy are important. Problem-solving skills and a proven ability to multi-task and ensure the safety of the crews and the public are critical for this role. Candidates should have a Journeyman Lineworker certification (or an electrical engineering degree) and a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a supervisory role within an electric power distribution utility.
