Duties and Responsibilities
Under The Direction Of The Supervisor Of Engineering
- Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the installation, inspection, maintenance, and expansion of the electric overhead, and underground transmission & distribution systems.
- Develop specifications for material purchases and construction standards.
- Develop project designs by attending pre-construction conferences, meeting and corresponding with developers, builders and customers, visiting properties, construction sites, and traversing across all types of terrain to perform asset auditing, surveying, staking, measuring, and other related duties.
- Advise developers, contractors, customers, and KCBPU crews regarding project technical requirements to meet KCBPU policies & standards as well as local, state, and federal codes, ordinances, and standards.
- Review plans, applications, and service requests for Distributed Generation facilities, Development Review Committee submittals, and all types of requests submitted to the Electrical Distribution Engineering Department, per KCBPU policies, processes, and standards.
- Review, prepare, and interpret technical documents and drawings to support system projects, upgrades, and other areas assigned.
- Perform detailed engineering analyses and calculations for electrical transmission and distribution systems, including:
Conductor sag and tension using manual and electronic methods
System operating parameters
Load sizing and transformer selection
Voltage drop assessments
Structural requirements for poles and guy wires
Cable pulling and ampacity evaluations
Protective device coordination
Additional system-related computations to support utility projects and programs
- Assist with responding to emergency conditions and restoring the distribution system to normal operation.
- Prepare studies, reports and recommendations pertaining to the overall electric transmission & distribution system operation.
- Interpret operating and maintenance reports resulting from operations and maintenance systems and recommend system improvements.
- Coordinate electrical distribution system, street lighting and traffic signal activities with other City departments, and with outside agencies.
Qualifications
Education Requirement:A Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering is required
Power engineering emphasis is preferred
Experience Requirement
Possess two (2) years or less of related work experience.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Ability to learn complex design methods.
Ability in developing good project management skills.
Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written, and interpersonal methods, including strong technical writing capabilities.
Ability to work and perform essential job responsibilities including operating computers, instruments, and associated programs including AutoCAD, Adobe, and MS Office products, as well as other applicable software applications and systems as assigned.
Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology is required. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
Physical Requirements
Applicants must be able to perform the essential job functions, which include office and field related work including walking and using survey instruments, measuring devices, and other equipment as needed in all weather and conditions with or without a reasonable accommodation.
