Electric Distribution Designer

About This Job


Position Summary

Responsible for evaluating residential and commercial development service requirements, researching property details, updating geographic features, and assessing existing TCEC plant and equipment to support the design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and accounting of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities. This includes but is not limited to creating CAD exhibits that reflect planned electrical facilities for service, collaborating with business development to ensure easement requirements are met, and creating designs for producing material lists and cost estimates that reflect the infrastructure required to serve developments.


Essential Job Functions

Coordinate with members, developers, contractors, consultants, commercial members, and municipalities on design requirements and CAD exhibits as needed.
Utilize AutoCAD applications to apply geographic location to site plans and subdivisions.
Convert AutoCAD exhibits to pdf files for internal and external review.
Assist with obtaining TXDOT and municipal permits, for developments, road widenings, and load growth projects.
Assess member load requirements needed to properly size transformers and other required equipment.
Understand easement requirements and documentation.
Draw new designs using TCEC's geographical information system.
Communicate with work order techs and the business development department to schedule initial contact with cooperative members and developers to understand electrical service requirements and evaluate existing electrical distribution facilities.
Perform right of way field investigations, easement research, and related support as needed for project management.
Perform system inspections which will include examination/documentation of pole-line conditions, asset inventory, GPS data collection, joint use contacts, and right of way condition assessment.
Must comply with Cooperative safety rules and regulations.
Must maintain confidential information as required by Cooperative Confidentiality Policy.
Communicate specific project needs to management in a timely and organized manner for budget analysis.
Create electronic staking sheets and perform right of way flagging/field staking as required to provide the requested service.
Perform other functions and requirements of the position as may be from time to time deemed necessary by management.


Position Requirements

Education Requirements-
+ High School Diploma or equivalent + Prefer Associates degree in relevant field. + Electrical Staking/Design certificate or equivalent
Experience-
+ Prefer 2+ years of experience in electric utility system design or similar. + Required to be self-sufficient and operate independently with direction, need, and efficiency at times.
Job Training-
+ On-going training on GPS equipment and field staking software. + On-going training related to loop calculations, transformer sizing, voltage drop, etc.
Communications Skills
+ Possess excellent oral and written communications skills. + Speak and understand the English language fluently.
Computer Skills
+ Ability to use AutoCAD tools to design subdivision infrastructure for presentation to developers. + Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Analytical Skills
+ Must be able to apply engineering theory to the design of electric distribution lines. + Must be able to understand GIS mapping terminology, survey concepts, and basic ESRI concepts. + Must be able to interpret system maps, engineering drawings, and staking sheets. + Ability to learn and apply basic computer, technical, and mathematical skills.
Other Skills
+ Must work well in a team environment. + Must have and maintain a valid Texas State Driver's License, minimum Class C. If a valid Texas State Driver's License has not been obtained, then it must be acquired in a reasonable amount of time as specified by the cooperative.


Relationships

Reports to the Design and Lighting Services Director
Work with Work Order Technicians, Engineering, Business Development, Field Services, GIS, Operations, and other Cooperative staff to address service issues.
Work with Members, Construction Personnel, Government Entities, Large Developers and Commercial Contacts.


Physical Demands

Heavy lifting or moving of materials: Occasionally - Up to 50lbs.

Operates Office Machines: Frequently - PC, Printers, GPS Equipment, etc.

Awkward Position (stooping, bending etc.): Frequently
Climbing Maximum: Rarely - 10'
Eye-hand Coordination: Frequently - Ex: Use of hand tools and computer equipment.
Location: Indoor 70% of time, Outdoor 30%
Work Conditions: Occasional overtime and after-hours work as required during major events and for systems upgrades and issues. This position will require you to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Position may be required to work in extreme terrain conditions, including but not limited to, highway ROW, high elevations, steep canyons, and creek beds. Position may encounter contact with wildlife while on site including hazardous insects, plants, animals, and other environmental hazards. Position is subject to irregular hours based on unforeseen circumstances and requirements. Position may be subject to travel and overnight stays on location based on need. Position will travel extensively by car or truck throughout the TCEC system.
