Job Description
The Distribution Engineer will develop work packages for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready and Street Light projects, and use customer GIS and WMIS and AS8 systems such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer and Maximo. The candidate may have the opportunity to experience both office and in-the-field settings at customer sites, and will be trained in customer engineering and construction standards. The engineer will perform structural analysis, guying calcs, cable pulling calcs, coordination of protective devices, and calculations of electric demand and fault currents. Candidates will gain experience in coordination of conflicting utilities, and other field engineering design requirements, the assessment and development of design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments, work permit development, easements and ROW applications, and the design of mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network system design and distribution system protection and coordination.
Primary Responsibilities
•Knowledge of developing estimated costs, development of a BOM, calculating the CIAC
•Skilled in design tools such as Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc
•Skilled in MicroStation-performing Electrical Distribution design
•Knowledge of design standards
•Prior relevant experience preferred
•Perform design engineering
•Manage scope, schedule and budget of work assigned
•Must be comfortable in both a field and office setting
•Leading preconstruction meetings with construction crews
•Review of engineering design packages for construction crews
•Performing functional tasks, planning, and/or customer follow-up
•Performing scope analysis of work assigned and maintaining schedule adherence in support of client priorities.
•Establish and develop client relationships while providing a positive influence in leading a team and collaborating with peers.
•Initiating continuous improvement to work flow processes that drives efficiency and high quality standards in client design deliverables.
•Lead and execute designs for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems (4-69kV) by preparing field notes, drawings, specifications and calculations for review and approval by a Senior Engineer as well as safely perform field walk downs to document existing conditions and generate material and labor specifications.
•Apply clients standards, guidelines, specifications, practices and procedures or appropriate industry standards in preparing design drawings as well as coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with all specifications, codes, and client requirements
•Regularly communicate and coordinate project activities with internal team members and begin to build relationships with clients - with some help and guidance from your supervisor.
Required Qualifications
•1-5 years of prior relevant experience or: relevant experience either working directly with an electric utility or an electric utility consulting company
•Experience with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client construction standards
•Experience using CAD tools
•Experience with software such as: PoleForeman, SAP, Microstation
•Previous exposure to Voltage Conversion projects, Road Widening Projects, Major Underground Projects, Conductor replacements, and OH to UG conversions
•Candidate must provide their own reliable transportation: Local customer/job related travel is anticipated and will be reimbursed at IRS approved rates
•Strong communication skills, written and interpersonal communications skills and supporting of customer advocacy
•Collaborative and inclusive of individuals of diverse backgrounds and geographic locations
•Ability to work with limited supervision
