Responsible for the development of strategic plans and positions that address key NERC policy issues that impact American Electric Power’s (“AEP”) businesses. Direct engagement in a wide range of matters before NERC is prominent, but this role also involves engagement with AEP’s Federal Affairs team to assess and influence federal legislation and activities of other federal agencies such as the DOE and FERC as they relate to NERC.
Responsible for understanding and communicating the implication of NERC policy issues and actions on AEP’s positions and initiatives at the RTO and state levels. As such, the individual will work closely with colleagues across AEP’s departments, operating company and regulatory leadership in the development of the strategic plans and policy positions as well as working with stakeholders within and outside the AEP footprint. Responsible for participating in AEP’s engagement in industry advocacy groups, such as the Edison Electric Institute (“EEI”), WIRES and American Clean Power Association (“ACP”), to drive alignment between AEP’s positions and the advocacy activities of these groups. Similarly, responsible for representing AEP in engagements with other utilities and stakeholders in joint advocacy initiatives around key issues.
The Director will work with the Senior Vice President Federal Affairs and the Federal Affairs and internal NERC compliance teams, as well as the AEP Transmission organization, to represent AEP and its operating companies both internally and externally. Internally, the Director will coordinate with internal subject matter experts and proactively develop policies and strategies beneficial to the company on NERC related matters. The Director will work as a part of the Federal Affairs team to liaise internally with relevant policy teams to convey a consistent message to NERC staff and officials. The Director will also contribute to stakeholder engagement opportunities within the Federal Affairs team, such as providing policy briefs to members of Congress and federal branch officials
