Position Summary
Director of Environmental & Regulatory Affairs reports to the Chief Operating Officer for US Operations. This role provides strategic direction for the environmental performance of WML by developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental strategies that promote sustainable development for US operations.
Supervisor Responsibilities
This position has formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop environmental excellence standards and provide leadership on significant Environmental issues/risks.
- Directly supervise the Montana Environmental Managers and provide indirect leadership to our North Dakota and New Mexico environmental teams.
- Identify and implement strategic plans for permitting and bonding activities. Ensure standard project management practices are used on these activities to set clear goals and timelines.
- Define clear roles and responsibilities for executing an environmental management plan. Define stakeholder roles using a standard RACI process.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the company and Regulatory authorities. Manage the relationship with the regulators to instill confidence in our environmental management systems.
- Research, design, develop, and evaluate plans to protect or improve air, soil, and water quality.
- Develop processes, policies, and procedures to identify, verify, document, and remedy sources of environmental pollution.
- Oversee and approve all testing and remediation activities to ensure plans satisfy organizational, client, and/or regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate public hearings and consultations on environmental issues and incorporate feedback into management plans.
- Approve designs that can impact the health, safety, and welfare of the general public, as required by law.
- Perform all duties in compliance with US regulatory agencies.
- Evaluate and provide audits, correctives actions and compliance verification for internal and external quality systems and their functions.
- Provide information for financial and public reporting obligations for compliance with company requirements.
- Perform related work as required.
Typical Physical Demands
Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires constant data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires sufficient mobility to travel and occasionally walk uneven surfaces during mine-site inspections.
Typical Working Conditions
Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Business Administration, Environmental Science, Planning or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Prefer a professional engineer.
- Minimum 8 years of related work experience.

- This position is expected to pay $180,000 - $210,000 annually; depending on skills, experience, education, and any certifications that are directly related to the position. It is eligible for our annual Short Term Incentive program.
