This Cathodic Protection Technician position would be located in the following location: Wood River, IL. Will consider other locations within the operating area. This position works in and around petroleum assets and executes various corrosion management field tasks. The successful candidate will perform such duties as: collect and analyze corrosion control data; ensure conformance with all regulations in support of DOT (PHMSA), environmental, safety, and regulatory compliance, maintain all equipment utilized for the application of cathodic protection, perform atmospheric coating inspections and perform cathodic protection interference testing. Overnight travel up to 40% of the time. Call-outs and overtime will be required on an as-needed basis. The Corrosion Control Services department of Marathon Pipe Line LLC operates and maintains cathodic protection systems for more than 8,200 miles of underground pipelines, 84 terminals, and 8 refineries. The successful candidate is required to live within 1 hr of the reporting location.
- Collect and analyze corrosion control data from test points, rectifiers, bonds, AC mitigation and casings via hand held data logger during annual surveys or as needed.
- Perform maintenance tasks such as locating and repairing cathodic protection cable breaks, troubleshooting and repairing test stations, rectifiers, RMUs (remote monitoring units), bonds, AC mitigation systems and commissioning or adjusting cathodic protection systems to ensure properly balanced.
- Install new test stations, RMUs and bonds
- Perform electrical isolation testing on dielectric components
- Obtain soil resistively data using Wenner 4 pin method
- Operate a line locator and/or pipeline current mapper (PCM)
- Ensure conformance with all regulations in support of DOT (PHMSA), other regulatory requirements and company standards
- Coordinate rectifier interruption plans with other local operators
- Analyze and communicate cathodic protection data to the appropriate corrosion specialists and/or corrosion engineer as required.
- Perform all tasks in a safe and environmentally conscious manner in accordance with all Environmental, Safety, and Regulatory requirements.
- High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree in a technical field preferred.
- AMPP CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester) certification or higher preferred, but willing to work with an individual who is passionate about corrosion to obtain a CP1 certification within 12 months of starting.
- 3 – 5 years of experience in the corrosion field preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills.
- Previous pipeline experience is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with basic electricity preferred.
- Will be required to pass Operator Qualifications to work on DOT assets.
