Job Summary
We are seeking a highly organized and technically capable HVAC Controls Engineer to lead the successful execution of building automation projects involving advanced HVAC systems. This role focuses on managing all phases of controls implementation on commercial HVAC systems. You will coordinate field activities, interface with stakeholders, and ensure system performance meets client expectations while staying on schedule and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
•Manage HVAC controls projects involving complex mechanical systems from kickoff through commissioning and turnover.
•Oversee the installation, integration, and commissioning of controls systems.
•Lead project planning, scheduling, resource coordination, and progress reporting.
•Work closely with mechanical contractors, commissioning agents, and end users to verify system performance and sequence compliance.
•Develop and implement custom control sequences using CONTROL-BASIC or equivalent DDC programming languages.
•Design intuitive graphical user interfaces for building automation systems to clearly present system status and control options.
•Coordinate subcontractors and field technicians to execute installation, wiring, device startup, and programming support.
•Interface with controls programmers and engineers to align controls logic with the mechanical design and owner requirements.
•Conduct or participate in functional testing, point-to-point checks, and system integration testing.
•Provide regular client communication and status updates; manage changes to scope or schedule proactively.
•Maintain project documentation, including submittals, RFIs, meeting notes, and closeout materials.
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
•3+ years of experience managing HVAC controls or building automation projects.
•Strong familiarity with the operation and control of VRF, hydronic, VAV, and ERV systems.
•Understanding of BAS/DDC platforms (Niagara, BACnet, Modbus, etc.).
•Ability to read and interpret HVAC drawings, sequences of operation, and mechanical specifications.
•Skilled in coordinating with field teams, subcontractors, and controls programmers.
•Proficient in Microsoft Office, project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet), and file management platforms.
•Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
•PMP or similar project management certification is a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
•Primarily office-based with regular site visits to active construction or retrofit projects.
•Must be able to navigate mechanical spaces, rooftops, and carry test equipment (up to 25 lbs).
•Occasional travel to customer sites as required for field coordination and commissioning.
Compensation: $80,000 - 110,000/year + bonus
