The Controls & Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, and implementing robust automation and control systems that support manufacturing operations. This role ensures production processes run efficiently, safely, and at the highest quality, while driving continuous improvement through system upgrades, optimization, and integration of Industry 4.0 technologies. The engineer will serve as both a project lead and collaborative team member, working with engineers, project managers, vendors, and customers to deliver effective, reliable automation solutions.
- Design, program, and support automation and control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, robotics, motion control, and SCADA systems.
- Develop and review electrical control schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and Bills of Material in compliance with standards.
- Lead or support automation projects from concept through installation, commissioning, and validation.
- Collaborate cross-functionally (production, maintenance, quality, IT, and customer teams) to ensure seamless system integration and high levels of collaboration.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime and ensure manufacturing efficiency.
- Drive continuous improvement through automation enhancements, process optimization, lean practices, and data integration.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, quality systems, and company policies.
- Maintain complete documentation for control systems, including CAD drawings, programs, and technical manuals.
- Train maintenance, operations, and customer personnel on automated equipment and systems.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in industrial automation and recommend upgrades where appropriate.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required).
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial automation, manufacturing controls, or related field (10+ years preferred).- Strong knowledge of PLC programming (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or similar).
- Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus, IO-Link, etc.).
- Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or equivalent).
- Hands-on experience with robotics, vision systems, sensors, drives, motion control, and pneumatic systems.
- Familiarity with SQL-based plant floor data gathering systems, MES, and Industry 4.0/Smart Manufacturing principles.
- Experience with plant-wide SCADA systems (Ignition, FactoryTalk, etc.)
- Experience with IT/OT networking and high-level languages (Visual Basic, C#, or similar).
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with ability to apply lean/continuous improvement principles.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, serving as both a project lead and supporting engineer.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to managers, customers, and vendors.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
- Ability to think critically.
- Proven track record of improving system reliability, efficiency, and integration through automation.
- Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in a manufacturing plant environment, including standing, walking, and occasional lifting.
- Occasional travel to vendors, customer sites, or other facilities may be required.
- Must follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE when on the plant floor.
