We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Civil Structural Design Engineer to join our team at K&A Engineering in Charlotte, North Carolina. Responsibilities & Duties::
Role Expectations:
•Design of electrical substation facilities including site and equipment layouts, shallow and deep foundations, structural steel supports for equipment, transmission line termination structures, drainage and grading design, roadway design, cable
ducts and trenches, cable trays and supports, fence and access gates, lighting and lighting poles and foundations
•Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision
•Undertake technical and feasibility studies and site investigations
•Perform calculations and develop detailed designs, including foundations, steel structures, and mounting
•Assist in tendering procedures and proposals
•Visit sites and advise on civil engineering issues
•Oversee the work of junior staff or mentoring designers/drafters
•Communicate and liaise effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers and clients
•Think both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems
•Manage budgets and other project schedules
•Manage changes related to the design and identify and notify relevant parties of changes in the project
•Review, check, and approve subcontractors’ calculations and design drawings
•Utilize a range of design computer packages for designing projects and undertaking complex and repetitive calculations
•Create BOMs and issue for requisitions
•Adopt all relevant requirements around issues such as building permits, environmental regulations, sanitary & drainage design, and safety on all work assignments
•Ensure projects run smoothly and complete on time and within budget
•Correct any project deficiencies that affect construction and safety requirements before final evaluation and project reviews
•Communicate and coordinate project activities with project engineer, customer representatives, and others as needed
•Travel out of town for short periods as required by projects and assignments
•Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice, and constructability
•Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects
•Maintaining complete project documentation for substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information
•Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members
•Efficient communication and ability to work with team members not located in the same office through MS Teams, email, or telephone calls
•Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Qualifications & Skills::
What we’re looking for:
•Master’s degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited university
•PE is a plus (if licensed in another state must be able to obtain a license within one year of date of hire)
•Approximately three years of related experience and/or proven knowledge in HV substation engineering and design
•Strong knowledge of concrete and steel design engineering
•Knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
•Strong oral and written communication skills and be able to present complex, technical information in simple, non-technical terms
•Knowledge of substation codes and standards such as ASCE 113, ASCE 74, ASCE 7, OSHA, IEEE, and ANSI
•Knowledge of building and design codes IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI-318
•Proficiency with Structural analysis software – STAAD.Pro, STAAD Foundations, Lpile, RISA, RISA Foundations, or similar software package
•Proficiency with Structural steel design – frames, columns, beams, and base plates per AISC
•Proficiency with concrete foundation design – slab on grade, shallow foundations, precast concrete foundations, retaining walls, fence foundations
•Proficiency with MS Office, MathCAD, PDF authoring software – Bluebeam
•Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D
