Job Responsibilities:
The Lineman performs highly skilled, journey-level work in the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of underground and overhead electric transmission and distribution systems. Responsibilities include working on service lines, transformers, meters, electrical substations, and related equipment.
Duties require climbing wood poles, ladders, and towers, and involve exposure to high-voltage energized lines and hazardous conditions, inclement weather, and physically demanding tasks such as heavy lifting.
Work is typically performed under the supervision of a Line Foreman and is evaluated based on on-site inspections and project outcomes. Linemen are subject to stand-by, pre-arranged, and call-out duty assignments.
Qualifications Required:
•High School Diploma or GED.
•Completion of an accredited Lineman Apprenticeship Program.
•Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of experience as a journey-level lineman in installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission/distribution systems and related equipment.
•Valid Nevada Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required by hire or promotion date.
•Residency within Elko, Carlin or Battle Mountain.
•Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification or the ability to obtain by hire date.
Special Requirements:
Subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing as per 49 CFR Part 382.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Electrical System Work:
•Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electric transmission and distribution lines, transformers, switches, meters, and associated equipment.
•Perform substation construction, installation, wiring, and commissioning tasks.
•Operate energized switches and related equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
•Trim trees and vegetation around energized electrical power lines to maintain safe clearances.
•Install and terminate underground high-voltage cable between manholes and vaults.
•Remove broken or defective conductors and replace or repair as necessary.
Equipment Operation:
•Operate and maintain bucket trucks, boom trucks, digger derricks, and other specialized heavy equipment.
•Utilize hydraulic tools, chain saws, jackhammers, and similar power tools.
•Set and remove power poles, install high-voltage connectors, and install protective grounds.
Safety and Compliance:
•Work safely in and around high-voltage equipment, ensuring compliance with OSHA 1910.269, APPA, and Nevada State Safety Rules.
•Perform pole top and bucket rescue procedures as needed.
•Install personal protective grounding equipment as required.
•Set up traffic control and jobsite safety measures around work zones.
Physical Requirements:
•Work at elevated heights exceeding 10 feet
•Climb poles, ladders, and towers.
•Lift and move objects up to 100 pounds using mechanical aids where necessary.
•Work in confined spaces, extreme weather conditions, and on uneven terrain.
•Ability to distinguish color-coded wiring
Administrative Duties:
•Maintain accurate timekeeping records and project documentation.
Use computers for GIS mapping, documentation, training, safety reporting, and basic communications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
•Electrical theory, practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
•Materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in the electric utility trade.
•Nevada Blue Stake Law and excavation safety practices ("Call Before You Dig").
•Occupational safety standards including APPA guidelines, OSHA 1910.269 regulations, and Nevada State Safety Rules.
Skills in:
•Safe operation of high-voltage electrical equipment and specialized lineman tools.
•Operation of specialized electrical trade equipment.
•Basic computer applications (GIS, timekeeping, email, reporting systems).
Ability to:
•Read and interpret construction plans, electrical schematics, and technical manuals.
•Analyze voltage recordings and make recommendations for system improvements.
•Effectively prioritize work, follow written and oral instructions, and work independently or as part of a team.
•Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and contractors.
