We are searching for a Battery Technology Lead (Principal Engineer) on behalf of our client. The person will be a key Principal Engineering role, spearheading the design, engineering, and technology evaluation of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).
This is a1 yr contract assignment. (W-2)
Location: Juno Beach, FL.
This role requires a comprehensive understanding of all components of utility-scale batteries and the ability to act as a value engineer to identify and resolve bottlenecks. The successful candidate will also play a crucial role in sizing batteries and managing system losses, ensuring optimal performance aligned with power purchase agreements and specific project requirements. This position generally prefers in-person office presence but offers hybrid or conditional remote options for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Engineering:
•Lead the technology assessment efforts for utility-scale batteryenergy storage systems.
•Evaluate technical specifications for battery components and systems, and act as leading SME in relation to Nextera Energy’s BESS OEMs.
•Ensure coherent and optimized sizing of the BESS from the point of interconnection, to GSU, Substation, Inverters, all the way to the battery.
•Constantly update and upgrade the existing BESS sizing calculator and assess the inputs/outputs to make the sizing calculator more accurate.
Technology Evaluation:
•Work as the lead SME in the team to assess and evaluate new and existingbattery technologies and their applicability to utility-scale systems.
•Conduct thorough technicalevaluations and performance assessments such as degradation, efficiency, available energy, and overall reliability, encompassing battery cells, modules, and system integration.
•Create weekly Energy Storage News brief for the management to stay ahead of the market activities.
•Create quarterly EnergyStorage Technologies Updatesummary for the management based on battery intel database such as Bloomberg, Wood Mac, and CEA.
•Stay abreast of industry trendsand advancements in energy storagetechnologies.
System Integration and Loss Management:
•Understand the sizing requirements for both DC (i.e. battery)and AC (i.e. inverter) components and ensure the sizing inputs are taking into account the detrimental factors from the broader energy ecosystem such as PV or wind.
•Identify and managelosses in the system to ensure accuratebattery sizing and project feasibility.
•Implement measures to enhance the efficiency, performance, and cost- effectiveness of storage solutions.
Power Purchase Agreements:
•Be hands-on involvedwith power purchaseagreements review to understand
•unique use case details and requirements for each batteryproject that can impact the sizing and overbuild.
•Size and optimizebattery systems accordingly to meet specificproject needs and contractual obligations.
Value Engineering and Optimization:
•Conduct value engineering assessments to addressbottlenecks and areasof improvement.
•Engage in optimization initiatives to harmonizeexisting systems with cutting-edge technological advancements.
Project Management and Supply Chain Coordination:
•Act as the main POC between the engineering team and the supply chain team for battery technology knowledge sharing.
•Collaborate internally with the BESS project managers and project engineers to ensure project-specific constraints are taken into account for the projectsizing, and act as main POC for communicating the project sizing with the supply chain team.
•Perform due diligence on manufacturing sites,assessing battery cell, module, and container integration and testing processes.
Pilot Projects and Innovation:
Perform due diligence on the commercial and technical readinessof various battery chemistries (e.g., lithium-ion, alternative technologies).
•Make recommendations for pilot projectsbased on the potential for commercialization and scalability in the United States.
•Work closely with others to secure funding for pilot projects and drive innovation in battery storage solutions.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
•Minimum of 5 years of experience in energy storagedesign, engineering, and technology evaluation.
•Extensive knowledge of battery chemistry, electrical systems, power electronics, thermal management, and system integration.
•Proven ability to manage and optimize systemlosses to ensure accurate batterysizing.
•Hands-on experience with power purchaseagreements and their unique specifications.
•Effective communicator with passion and experience in creating interactive power point presentations to present ideas or technology summaries.
•Strong analytical skillsto create interactive Excel Spreadsheets and PowerBi dashboards and partner with the Software Development team to automatethe BESS systemsizing for projects.
•Excellent document and folder organizational skills for easy access and retrieval and data base tracking.
•Excellent project management, communication, and leadership abilities.
•Willingness to travelto battery manufacturing sites for technology assessments.
•Experience with BESS industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols related to energy storage, such as UL1973, UL9540,UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, applicable IFC/IBC sections.
•Experience with power electronics, power conversion units, and DC/DCconverters.
