· Urbix, Inc. operates a facility in Mesa, AZ with more than 60 employees.
· The Mesa facility is focused on continued pilot operations for sample production and completing the Company’s commercial demonstration module along with a state-of-the-art battery testing laboratory and quality control capabilities.
· The Company was recently selected for a $125 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains for a 10,000tpa commercial-scale production facility.
Job Summary: The Battery Scientist will be accountable for leading the electrochemical testing strategy, ensuring that anode materials meet customer specifications, performance requirements, and scale-up needs. This role is responsible for the design and troubleshooting of battery cell testing, working closely with battery lab technicians to validate materials as we transition to commercial-scale production. The Battery Scientist will drive test method development, data interpretation, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure materials perform consistently and safely at scale. Additionally, the role will support the development of external cell testing services, exploring opportunities to offer lab testing capabilities to third-party partners and other customers.

Experience: Minimum 10 years of industry experience, with a strong preference for candidates with leadership roles and expertise in the Li ion battery industry.
Responsibilities:
Electrochemical Testing & Troubleshooting:
· Optimize Test Methods: Continuously refine test setups, conditions, and parameters to improve data accuracy, reliability, and predictive value.
· Troubleshoot Performance Issues: Investigate failures, inconsistencies, and deviations in cell performance, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
· Battery Lab Support: Work with technicians in cell assembly, formation, and testing to ensure high-quality, reproducible results.
· Data Analysis & Reporting: Conduct in-depth analysis of voltage profiles, capacity fade, coulombic efficiency, lithium plating and degradation mechanisms, delivering actionable insights to operations teams.
· Customer Electrochemical Support and Spec Alignment: Collaborate with commercial teams toreplicate customer’s testing protocols and slurry recipes, troubleshoot performance deviations, and refine material validation approaches to ensure alignment with customers.
Scale-Up & Manufacturing Support:
•Validate Material Consistency: Establish and refine quality benchmarks for anode material electrochemical performance.
•Collaborate on Process Optimization: Work with operations, QAQC, and engineering teams to align processing parameters with electrochemical performance goals.
Workplace Health, Safety, and Risk Management:
•Enforce Safety Protocols: Ensure all electrochemical testing, battery handling, and failure analysis follow strict QHSE and hazardous material handling standards.
•Mitigate Risks in Cell Testing: Implement critical safety measures
•Compliance & Training: Train battery lab personnel to improve test procedures, data handling, and safety best practices.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Engagement:
•Battery Lab Technicians: Provide hands-on guidance and troubleshooting support in cell testing.
•QAQC & Quality Teams: Align cell testing results with material specification tolerances and production control limits.
•Commercial & Customer Interface: Work closely with the commercial team to translate customer needs into test methodologies and ensure materials meet performance guarantees.
•Operations & Scale-Up Teams: Support full-scale validation of anode materials in industrial production settings.
•Suppliers & External Partners: Engage with testing labs, OEMs, and material suppliers to benchmark performance.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation:
•Advance Electrochemical Characterization Methods: Explore new test approaches, modeling techniques, and diagnostic tools to enhance material validation.
•Competitor Benchmarking: Compare Urbix anode materials against industry-leading commercial anodes, identifying competitive strengths and gaps.
•Scalability & Cost Analysis: Assess whether electrochemical properties remain stable as production scales up, working with finance and operations to ensure cost-effective material deployment.
External Cell Testing Services Development
•Collaborate with commercial team to evaluate and develop opportunities to offer lab testing services to external companies.
•Define service capabilities, engagement strategies, and pricing models for third-party testing offerings.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
•Strong expertise in electrochemical testing of battery materials
•Deep practical expertise in cell assembly, electrochemical testing, and troubleshooting
•Experience mentoring or leading lab teams
•Familiarity working in commercial battery material validation environments
•Ability to translate customer specifications into actionable test strategies for material qualification.
•Strong collaboration skills to lead and mentor technicians while interfacing withoperations, and commercial teams.

Education and Certification Requirements:
•Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field preferred, or
•Bachelor’s degree with significant hands-on experience in battery testing, electrochemical analysis, or materials validation in an industrial or R&D setting.
Working Conditions:
•General work environment - sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
•Shared workspace, no individual assigned office space.
•Work is conducted primarily indoors/warehouse with varying environmental conditions such as: dust, heat, and fluorescent lighting.
•Construction site conditions for current expansion project.
•Noise level is usually medium to high
•Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
