About This Job

Located in Sayreville, New Jersey, the Red Oak Power Facility is an 805-megawatt natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant featuring Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. The facility includes three Siemens-Westinghouse 501FD2 gas turbines, three Foster Wheeler heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and a 277-megawatt Toshiba steam turbine. It provides reliable and efficient power to the region.


Opportunity Summary


The Auxiliary Operator plays a vital role in operating and maintaining the Red Oak Power Facility, a combined-cycle power generation plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable performance. Key responsibilities include monitoring equipment, troubleshooting issues, analyzing operational data, and collaborating with team members to optimize processes while maintaining compliance with environmental and safety regulations. This position also involves managing water chemistry, overseeing maintenance activities, and contributing to continuous improvements in plant operations.


Primary Functions

Your scope of responsibility as Auxiliary Operator will include the following primary functions:

Communicate plant issues to the Shift Lead and/or Operations Manager, ensuring they are informed of unusual conditions, damaged equipment, and job progress relevant to facility operations.
Operate and maintain the combined cycle generating facility, including all associated auxiliary and support equipment, to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Make informed operational decisions based on plant procedures, environmental regulations, safety protocols, and operating data to maintain compliance and reliability.
Monitor and operate the distributed control system (DCS) to support plant operations.
Read and record operating data from meters, gauges, and automated devices, including temperature, vibration, pressure, and fluid levels, to verify operating conditions.
Conduct periodic visual and auditory inspections of equipment to detect malfunctions or the need for repairs, adjustments, or lubrication.
Utilize PI-Process Book to review and analyze data, identifying performance or reliability issues with plant equipment.
Perform water sampling on the HRSG cycle and cooling water systems to maintain proper water chemistry within control ranges.
Collaborate with operators and the water treatment vendor to monitor the overall chemistry program and implement necessary adjustments.
Operate the demineralized water system in accordance with OEM and plant procedures, ensuring water quality meets acceptable standards.
Monitor chemical inventory levels and coordinate the ordering and delivery of required chemicals.
Enter work requests and purchase requests into the plant’s computerized maintenance management system (MP2) to facilitate maintenance activities.
Direct contractors as needed to support the repair and maintenance of plant equipment.
Diagnose mechanical malfunctions or failures in plant operating equipment and recommend corrective actions.
Read, understand, and comply with all regulatory procedures, facility safety programs, and plant environmental permits to ensure adherence to requirements.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.

Working Relationships


The Auxiliary Operator reports to the Operations Manager. The Auxiliary Operator may also give direction to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


Power plant environment. Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.


Fitness for Duty


All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.


Work Schedule


Rotating shift schedule with an average of approximately 84 hours every two weeks. Availability for overtime is required. The position involves extended working hours and varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on schedules, workload, and plant conditions. Periodic "on-call" status will also be required.


Compensation


Initial starting compensation will range from $31.15 to $45.00 per hour and will include an annual performance bonus.


Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school.
Must possess a valid New Jersey Black Seal High Pressure Boiler Operator License or greater.
A minimum of two years of experience in power plant operations is preferred, with extensive knowledge of the power plant industry being desirable.
Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling is preferred.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion and steam turbine operations, closed-system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and plant parameter inspection and recording is highly desirable.
Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls is beneficial.
Familiarity with safety protocols, hazard identification, and compliance with OSHA or similar safety regulations.
Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills to effectively manage tasks and collaborate with team members.
Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
