The Associate Director of Content and Communications will help develop and execute DBIA’s communications strategies, content, programs and initiatives, working to support the organization’s brand and mission. This position will serve in a cross-functional role across the organization, simultaneously working as editor-in-chief, executive producer, product developer, publicist and storyteller. This role will help craft creative, compelling and effective multi-platform campaigns and content to attract and engage diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director of Content and Communications will be responsible for a wide variety of strategic communications activities. These include, but are not limited to:
Editorial, Content, Creative and Thought Leadership:
•Oversee and manage the editorial function of the organization’s blog, podcasts, newsletters, videos and website, to include providing content, working with authors and contributors, and developing/managing editorial calendars.
•Work collaboratively with legislative affairs staff to create campaigns in support of advocacy initiatives.
•Lead and oversee content production with designers, producers, contractors and product creators and their respective budgets (internal and external).
•Continuously help develop strategic approaches to communications and content in ways that support the strategic vision and roadmap for organizational growth.
•Proactively contribute to DBIA’s storytelling, message development and narration efforts.
Internal and External Communications:
•Oversee DBIA’s media relations, including directly interfacing with reporters, arranging DBIA leadership interviews, writing press releases, developing a contact database for trade and national media, monitoring press coverage, and maintaining strong relationships with trade publications.
•Monitor Communications inbox for media and general inquiries and conducting necessary response follow-up.
•Proactively reach out to outlets to pitch stories and generate public relations strategies that allow DBIA leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
•Assist in the production of advocacy news in weekly and monthly publications. Assist with researching and writing commentaries, talking points, slide presentations and policy documents for association CEO, board president, and senior staff in a manner consistent with the association’s positions and objectives. Provide writing support for other communications products.
•Help develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to advance DBIA’s brand across its platforms; broaden awareness of the organization’s programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
•Offer strategic communications guidance across the organization, including plans to maximize content and event impact, earned media coverage and audience engagement.
•Produce a wide range of high-quality written communication materials including, but not limited to, website messaging, talking points and op/ed pieces for DBIA leadership, scripts, briefing materials, presentations, press releases, impact stories and blog/newsletter copy.
•Develop a forward-looking media engagement calendar for the organization, taking into account key relevant milestones and announcements.
•Establish key metrics for public relations campaigns, gather data and reports on campaign performance against established metrics, and use insights from metrics and analytics tools to inform DBIA on the impact, engagement, development and execution of future plans.
Organizational Leadership:
•Serve as an ambassador for the organization and build a wide and diverse network of internal and external relationships to support communications objectives.
•Serve as staff liaison to DBIA committees as assigned; take notes; draft and distribute minutes; draft reports to leadership; oversee follow-up.
•Willingness to travel to DBIA conferences and Board of Directors meetings, as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
•Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or related field.
•Minimum 10 years of communications, public relations, content, or relevant experience in a leadership role at a purpose-driven agency, company or non-profit/trade organization.
•Local candidate to the DC/VA/MD metro area (hybrid work schedule with three days in Washington, DC, office)
•The candidate should have a proven track record of success and impact with their work product and with their leadership and management experience.
•Experience with nonprofit and/or construction industry communications strongly preferred
•Comfortable and resilient in times of chaos, calm and crisis. Must be flexible and able to multitask; can work within a multi-faceted, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrating resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
•Candidate should have a track record developing successful strategic directions for content and events designed to inform, illuminate, educate.
•A creative operator that can architect, articulate and shape compelling communications and successfully turn ideas into manageable project plans, deliverables and timelines.
•Exceptional and succinct written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface at all levels of the organization.
•Experience taking in-depth, complex ideas and issues (of policy, strategy, organizational design) and bringing them to a variety of audiences.
•A proactive problem solver who can anticipate needs, be flexible and manage multiple competing deadlines.
•Grace under pressure and a sense of humor are essential.
•Excellent interpersonal skills and a diplomatic demeanor.
•A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently. Very detail-oriented, ability to move quickly between program issues and content types.
•Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and media monitoring software (Meltwater, Cision, PR Newswire) strongly preferred.
