Job summary
The associate counsel supports Platte River business operations under the direct supervision of the director of legal affairs. Responsibilities include legal issues related to employment law matters, contracting and procurement, state and federal regulatory matters, open meetings and open records laws, and land use and property issues.
This position has hands-on involvement with human resources, contracting, other operational staff, and with senior leadership. Our ideal candidate is an adaptive and collaborative professional who will maintain composure and discretion while navigating situations involving sensitive and confidential information. This position works a typical Monday through Friday schedule in an office setting and may be eligible for hybrid workdays within a commutable distance of Fort Collins.

Essential duties and responsibilities
•Models the mission, vision, values, and culture of the organization.
•Provides legal counsel and support to staff and management on human resource and employment law matters.
•Provides legal counsel and support to staff in contracting and procurement activities.
•Provides legal counsel to internal staff on various matters relevant to business and government information, for example: open records and open meetings act requirements, cybersecurity, and legal and regulatory compliance.
•Provides analysis and recommendations on real property interests and issues, including easements and utility crossing agreements.
•Performs legal research and drafts contracts, memoranda, and other legal documents.
•Helps implement legal policies and practices.
•Works with outside counsel on various legal and regulatory matters.
•Respects and models workplace safety and compliance culture; encourages others to follow best practices.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Ability to convey sensitive and confidential information in a calm and discreet manner.
•Solid understanding of contract law and principles of succinct, jargon-free drafting.
•Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to conduct legal research, analyze legal issues, evaluate opinions, make recommendations, and implement solutions.
•Skilled in analyzing and interpreting contracts, statutes, regulations, and policies.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships and work across all levels of the organization.
•Demonstrated commitment to delivering high quality legal support services as a subject-matter expert.
•Strong interest in working closely with technical subject-matter experts in areas such as reliability, engineering, finance, and operations.
•Aptitude for communicating with clarity and credibility to a wide range of internal and external audiences, including board members, executives, colleagues, owner community representatives, and outside stakeholders.
•Willingness to seek and receive feedback from colleagues and customers to meaningfully improve processes and outcomes.
•Ability to travel and attend meetings within and outside the state.
Candidate qualifications
•Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. school of law.
•Be an active member in good standing of a state bar.
•Be admitted to practice law in Colorado within six months of beginning employment (single-client registration is acceptable). Also, maintain a valid driver's license and remain insurable under vehicle liability policy.
•Have at least two years as a practicing attorney with direct responsibility for employment law matters, and two years in transactional, governmental, or corporate law.
Experience in the following areas is preferred:
•Labor and employment law in the State of Colorado.
•Laws applicable to multi-jurisdictional employers.
•Electric, natural gas, or water utilities.
•Real estate easements and transactions.
•Open records and open meetings laws governing Colorado enterprises.
Pay
This is an exempt role; wages are paid bi-weekly. Factors that may be used to determine actual salary include specific skills, years of experience, education, and certifications.
•Full pay range: $150,396 to $218,096 if annualized.
•Hiring range: $150,396 to $184,354 if annualized.
