Position Description
Kinder Morgan (KM) is one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America. We own an interest in or operate approximately 83,000 miles of pipelines and 144 terminals. Our pipelines transport natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and more. Our terminals store and handle renewable fuels, petroleum products, chemicals vegetable oils, and other products.
Kinder Morgan is seeking a full-time Assistant General Counsel or Senior Counsel to support its Natural Gas Group in day-to-day regulatory and commercial matters. Successful candidates will have substantial experience with regulatory matters involving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and general business transactions affecting interstate natural gas pipelines.
Responsibilities
- Support KM’s regulatory, commercial, and business development teams in preparing FERC applications, filings, notices, motions, responses, and other documents related to natural gas project certificates, transportation and storage rates and fees (including FERC rate cases), and tariff matters.
- Provide legal and strategic advice on Federal, state, and local regulatory and compliance matters and tariff issues.
- Represent KM in commercial transactions, including negotiating and drafting long-term natural gas transportation and storage agreements, project precedent agreements, interconnect agreements, asset purchase and sale agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other commercial arrangements.
- Assist with other general legal matters and transactions related to KM’s businesses as they arise.
- Possess a JD from an accredited law school and be admitted to and in good standing with a State Bar.
- At least 7 years of relevant legal experience, preferably with a mix of law firm and in-house experience at a midstream or other energy company.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with attorneys (both in-house and outside counsel) and colleagues working in other KM locations and business segments.
- Strong understanding how KM’s regulated businesses are impacted by various Federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.
- Excellent writing, research, and communication skills.
- A motived self-starter that is nimble, responsive, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with administrative law proceedings, joint ventures, and corporate secretarial matters is a plus.
- This position may require 10% to 20% travel.
Salary Range: $160,800 -$241,200. This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
