Job Summary

Murphy Oil Corporation is looking for an Advisor, Geoscientist for the subsurface development department to work operated and non-operated deepwater fields. The candidate must have demonstrated proficiency in constructing field models and experience in well planning and justification. They should have expertise in Petrel together with an understanding of geologic models for lead generation, resource/reserve estimation and well trajectory planning is required.

This role will have the ability to apply quantitative analysis techniques, such as paleogeography, sequence stratigraphy, geo-statistics, and risk analysis to identify and optimize development of infield hydrocarbon potential. They should have experience in building and modifying geological models to accommodate reservoir engineering history matching information is also required. Experience with prospect risking, volumetrics, and exploration (including Near Field EXP) is considered an asset. The position requires a self-starter, comfortable in a fast-paced environment and shifting priorities.

The position involves defining the scope and requirements of major projects, creating multiple effective and cost-efficient solutions for specialized technical opportunities, and drafting executive summaries or presentations on new issues. The role requires anticipating management's questions and responding effectively and strategically to their concerns. Additionally, this position may serve as a multi-discipline team lead on small to medium-sized projects and develop a working knowledge of other functions to better approach new opportunities.

Interpersonal skills are essential for this position. The role entails effectively representing the team's work to management, cultivating coaching and mentoring abilities to support junior team members, and exemplifying professional and ethical conduct. Additionally, it requires expanding one's influence beyond the immediate team, engaging with other teams within the area, and extending reach across various regions.

The Advisor, Geoscientist will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as the business needs allow.

Responsibilities

- Assess and recommend the drilling of new wells and infill wells

- Interpret seismic and well logs, generate maps and cross sections, conduct risk and reserve/resource analyses, and present supporting work to management

- Present and make recommendations to management to support work

- Integrate data and construct geomodels in Petrel

- Interface with reservoir engineering for construction of reservoir simulation models

- Pre-drill well preparation and planning. Interface with Drilling, Subsurface, Regulatory and Partners

- Provide operations support in drilling/rig program and update field results and reserves as needed

- Peer assist, collaboration both within the team and external support

- Conduct lead/prospect risking and volumetric calculations

- Identify potential Near Field Exploration opportunities

- Having extensive knowledge of the discipline and multiple essential skills.

- Applying advanced professional knowledge and expertise in tasks requiring more discretion.

- Showing proficiency and competency in a significant area, with a comprehensive understanding of related fields.

Qualifications/Requirements

- Masters in Geology or other geoscience discipline

- Minimum 20 years’ experience in oil and gas exploration and development with 5 years’ directly involved in modeling is required

- Experience in sedimentological and stratigraphic characterization of deepwater depositional systems, their facies distribution and reservoir quality

- Advanced Petrel reservoir modeling skills

- Ability to work multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

- Experience with operational well planning and execution

- Strong verbal and written communication English skills

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
