To safely perform maintenance and repairs to District vehicles and equipment to ensure availability of vehicles and equipment required to facilitate accomplishment of the District’s mission.
- Perform maintenance, modifications, and repairs to District vehicles and equipment, including a preventive maintenance program, with minimal interruption of District operations.
- Perform preventive maintenance services specified by manufacturers, industry standards and District policy.
- Analyze trouble reports and mechanical problems; then make proper repairs.
- Monitor, report, order and stock inventory as related to Auto Shop.
- Responsible for use, care and security of tools, vehicles, equipment and materials utilized.
- Operate vehicles and equipment as related to job functions.
- Maintain record of service calls made and action taken.
- Complete paperwork associated with job functions in a neat and timely manner.
- Operate the District's computer system as related to job functions.
- Perform miscellaneous prefabrication of materials for other District projects.
- Monitor, understand and comply with regulations regarding hazardous waste.
- Work with Facilities Department by observing, reporting and assisting with repairs and maintenance
- Assist Materials Department with cycle counts and stock level counts.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB STANDARDS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:- Must develop a thorough knowledge of the District’s Accident Prevention Rules, procedures, equipment and tools and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Must become knowledgeable of District recordkeeping methods and procedures such as time sheets, work orders, etc.
- Must have a demonstrated ability to operate construction and maintenance vehicles and equipment.
- Must have the ability to repair, service and maintain automobiles, light- and heavy-duty trucks, digger-derricks, manlifts, forklifts and other District equipment, tools or devices as required.
- Must be familiar with engines, electrical systems, electronic systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, cooling systems, pneumatic systems, transmissions, rear differentials and fuel systems.
- Must have the ability to weld utilizing various applicable methods.
- Must have the ability to order parts and coordinate repairs to minimize down time for fleet.
- Must have the knowledge and ability to use the required tools of the trade.
- Must have the ability to communicate clear and concise verbal instructions and information to coworkers, customers and others.
- Must have the ability to learn and use related computer applications.
- Must have the ability to operate equipment efficiently to facilitate completion of work.
- Must have math, reading and writing skills as related to job functions.

- Must have successfully completed training as a Journeyman Mechanic or other District-approved training.
- Must have experience repairing, servicing and maintaining a vehicle fleet comparable to the District's.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must pass a District physical examination and be able to perform essential job functions.
- Must have, or obtain within six months of employment or assignment to this position, valid Washington State-approved Industrial First Aid card and Washington State-approved flagging and traffic control certification.
- Must have, or obtain within three months of employment or assignment to this position, a valid Washington State driver's license with Commercial Class A and air brake endorsements, and Tanker Vehicle Endorsement “N”. Employees with an out-of-state license must obtain a Washington State license in accordance with Washington State law.
- Must have a safe driving record.
- Must work emergency and prearranged overtime.
- Must wear and utilize personal protective equipment as required.
- Must provide and maintain sufficient tools as determined by the District to perform the required duties.
- The job functions will be performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to adverse weather conditions and noise.
- Job functions will require work on ladders, structures and equipment.
- Job functions on and around mechanized equipment will present the need for alertness and safety awareness.
- The job functions require traversing areas where footing is poor and the ground uneven and/or water soaked.
- The job functions require working with persons who exhibit many types of personalities and behaviors.
- May encounter the need to work with hazardous materials.
- The work requires the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Materials, equipment, etc. will be lifted to and from trucks, equipment, warehouse shelves and the ground.
- The work requires the ability to climb ladders and structures; to climb on, off and around trucks and other equipment; and to work in elevated positions up to 25 feet.
- The work requires the ability to work on detailed engine and equipment parts, to work in limited light, and to differentiate among colors.
- The work requires the ability to operate tools, equipment, vehicles and machinery.
- The work requires the ability to answer questions and communicate with coworkers, customers and others in person, via email and on telephones and mobile radios.
- The work requires the ability to see and hear in order to detect problems and ensure the safety of employees and others in response to exposure to the hazards associated with this position.

Mechanic, Class II, after 12 months - $47.31 per hour
Mechanic, Class III, after 24 months - $50.08 per hour
