We are seeking a highly skilled Welding Engineer to join our team in Onaway, MI. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing welding processes and procedures to ensure the highest quality standards are met. The Welding Engineer will work closely with production teams to identify areas for improvement and implement solutions to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Review project specifications, drawings and Codes & Standards to develop welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post-heating requirements.
- Develops and maintains corporate welding procedures (WPS) and welder performance qualification records (WPQRs)
- Develop, qualify, write, and certify PQR(s) and WPS(s) for client review and approval
- Coordinate welding procedure qualification requirements with the metallurgical testing laboratories
- Oversee and witness welding PQR test coupons
- Provide management level oversight and technical support to internal NDT personnel and coordinate with assigned Level III, on personnel qualifications and on the performance of in-process inspections as they relate to specified project requirements.
- Review, comment and approve supplier welding procedures and welder performance qualifications as applicable
- Complete oversight of all customer supplied documents, including compliance to meet customer specified requirements.
- Provide technical support as related to industry standards, specifications and codes such as ASME, AWS and API.
- Conducting failure analyses and cause analyses on welding issues.
- Oversight of welders and their qualifications.
- Regular audits, and reviews of welding procedures, processes and documentation.
- Managing and updating welding procedure qualification and generating welding procedures to help the manufacturing and welding teams.
- Develop and obtain internal approval for (3) D.1.5 welding processes that can be available to estimating as alternative options during bidding process.
- Report out weekly results of in process welding audits and identify CI opportunities realized or potential.
- For D.1.6 SS welding process, reduce the use of flux core and increase the use of solid for 1F/F & 2F/H welding.
- Spend a good portion of each day on the floor mentoring our least experienced welders with hoods on and demonstrating best welding practices, techniques, machine set up and early identification of weld failures.
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in welding engineering
- Strong knowledge of welding processes and procedures
- Experience with welding equipment and tools
