Water/Wastewater Design Engineer
KLH Engineers, our team of engineers, surveyors, and drafters, works on projects that ensure safe drinking water gets where it needs to go, wastewater is properly treated, and stormwater stays under control. Since 1982, we’ve partnered with numerous municipal clients across Pennsylvania, delivering top-notch services in water, wastewater, stormwater, and general municipal engineering. We bring creativity, technical excellence, and practicality to every project, ensuring our engineering solutions not only work but also make life a little easier for everyone.
We’re currently looking for a Water/Wastewater Design Engineer to join our growing team in our Pittsburgh office. If you're someone who enjoys solving complex problems, collaborating with great people, and making a tangible difference, you’ll fit right in.
What You’ll Do:
•Conduct site visits to gather firsthand knowledge (we believe good design starts with getting your boots a little dirty).
•Meet with clients and operators to understand existing conditions, challenges, and project scopes.
•Analyze operational data and use predictive modeling to size pumps, blowers, and treatment processes.
•Perform hydraulic profile, mass balance, and process calculations like a seasoned pro.
•Prepare planning and design reports that communicate clearly to both clients and regulators.
•Collaborate with other disciplines—Civil, Structural, HVAC, Electrical, Controls, Geotech.
•Work with our CAD staff to develop and manage drawing sets.
•Prepare and submit permit applications.
•Write detailed contract specs for public bids (and yes, we know that’s oddly satisfying to some engineers).
•Support project managers during the bid and construction phases, including reviewing submittals, RFIs, and providing field engineering as needed.
•Oversee process/equipment startup and testing—helping turn drawings into reality.
Who You Are:
•You’ve got experience designing water/wastewater treatment systems or pumping stations, and probably have a few good war stories from the field.
•You hold a Bachelor of Science in Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering. A Master’s degree is a plus and would be highly valued.
•We hope you’re already a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania or have your EIT and are actively working toward licensure—if not, but you’re a pro with years of experience, we’re still very interested.
•You're fluent in technical speak but can explain things in plain English when needed (bonus points if you’ve ever had to explain hydraulic profiles to your family).
•You know your way around Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel.
•You can fly solo when needed, but you play well with others and don’t hide behind your monitor when things get tough.
•Detail-oriented, organized, and calm under pressure—you get things done without breaking a sweat.
•You're willing to put in the extra time when needed to get the job done right.
Why KLH?
•We’ll give you the space to do what you do best—be an engineer. You won’t be expected to act as a salesperson, and we’re not hung up on accounting metrics or KPIs.
•We’re big enough to tackle complex, high-impact projects in-house, but small enough that your ideas won’t get lost in the shuffle.
•You’ll work alongside a smart, collaborative, and genuinely supportive team.
•We offer a flexible work schedule and the ability to work from home when necessary.
•You’ll have the opportunity to see projects from concept to construction and start-up, and won’t be pigeonholed into doing the same task day after day.
•We believe in investing in our people through mentorship, continued learning, and opportunities for growth.
If you're ready to take the next step in your career and join our top-notch team—one that values your contributions, supports your growth, and offers meaningful project work—we’d love to hear from you. Apply today to discover how your skills and experience can make a real impact at KLH and with the clients we proudly serve.
