Water Treatment Operator in Training (OIT) (Labor Grade 5-6-7-9*)

Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.


Rate Ranges:

LG5: $36.97-$38.02-$38.90 per hour (Current Steelworkers Union Members)

LG5: $30.93 - $33.58 - $36.23 - $38.90 per hour (New Steelworkers Union Members)

LG6: $38.87-$39.25-$39.94 (Current Steelworkers Union Members)

LG6: $32.13-$35.30-$38.48-$38.87 per hour (New Steelworkers Union Members)

LG7: $39.25-$39.94-$40.71 per hour (Current Steelworkers Union Members)

LG7: $33.32 - $35.78 - $38.25 - $40.71 per hour (New Steelworkers Union Members)

Purpose and Scope:

The purpose of job is to learn to perform routine technical work in operating the RWA’s water treatment plants under the direction of certified water treatment plant operators, with the expectation of obtaining CT DPH Operators Class IV certification within four years. Water Treatment Operators who are Operators in Training will remain Operators in training until receiving a Class IV certification. *Labor grade will be dependent upon Water Treatment Operator in training certification class (I, II, III or IV).


Responsibilities:

Learn to perform the various tasks associated with the maintenance and operation of a water treatment plant
Under direction, collect daily operational information such as chemical tank level readings using SCADA systems
Under direction, monitor and assist using standard operating procedures in the proper filling of bulk and other chemical tanks during deliveries
Under direction, perform lab testing and reviews results on a daily basis
Assist with routine preventative maintenance of equipment, including cleaning and calibrating analyzers
Under direct supervision, assist with repairing plant equipment such as, chemical feed equipment, pumps, analyzers, process equipment
Mark work orders ready for closure into the CMMS after Team Lead review
Receive forklift training, safety training
Perform cleaning as needed.
Operate safety equipment which includes the use of self-contained breathing apparatus, chemical suits, respirators, etc.
Required to work on weekends, scheduled holidays, fill in for vacation or sickness
Requires traveling to various sites
Comply with all occupational safety and health standards and all RWA safety guidelines and rules


Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent
Valid Connecticut driver’s license
Employees must obtain a CT Class IV Operator in Training (OIT) Water Treatment Operator Certification within four (4) years of starting in the Department
Knowledge of basic mechanical concepts and procedure of water treatment
Aptitude for the use of the tools, equipment and materials that apply to this position
Ability to understand and carry out written or verbal work orders or assignments
Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations with the use of a calculator
Ability to perform the following: straight pulling, reaching above the shoulder, pushing, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, and repeated bending (will be required to take all qualifying tests)
Ability to distinguish basic colors and various shades
Familiar with PC applications such as Windows, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Internet
Have good communication (both written and verbal) and organizational skills
Reads, writes, and speaks English
Must be mechanically inclined
Ability to lift 55 pounds
