Description Our Story
Crude oil is an essential element of our nation’s energy supply, fueling our cars, trucks, airplanes, and factories as well as heating and cooling our homes. As part of the vital energy mix, the United States relies on a steady supply of crude oil to produce products we use on a daily basis. LOOP plays a key role in meeting those daily energy needs as the single largest point of entry for waterborne crude oil coming into the U.S.
LOOP is a joint venture of Marathon Petroleum Company, Shell Oil Company, and Valero, and is the only Deepwater Port in the U.S. capable of offloading and loading a wide range of vessels from Ultra Large Crude Carriers down to Medium Range Tankers.
LOOP stores crude oil in eight underground caverns in a naturally occurring salt dome capable of storing approximately 60 million barrels. In addition, LOOP has a modern above-ground tank facility consisting of twenty-two tanks with a total storage capacity of 12 million barrels.
Louisiana has been home to LOOP for over forty years. With headquarters in Covington and operating facilities in Galliano and St. James LA, as well as a facility 20 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.
Summary Description
Under direct supervision, primary responsibilities are to ensure crude oil is transported from storage to delivery as safely and efficiently as possible. This is an entry level position that will work closely with experienced operators training on all day-to-day activities. This individual will have to complete training per the on-the-Job training program on an established timeline. The successful candidate will be responsible for completing training, obtaining required Operator Qualifications (OQ), working with daily Operations, performing daily job duties, such as equipment & systems checklist, issue safety permits & complete lock out/tag out (LO/TO) of equipment for maintenance, and build critical job specific knowledge. The successful candidate will also ensure safe operation of Company assets, ensure environmental stewardship, and safety of all personnel by making rounds, atmosphere/area monitoring, complete checklist, perform periodic maintenance, assisting operations, projects, maintenance, communicate with Oil Movement Controllers (OMCs) to investigate alarms and perform local operations as needed. Upon completion of training, the successful candidate will be expected to assist Operations with an emphasis on knowledge of corrective actions to prevent or reduce harm to people, facilities, and the environment, for LOOP’s operating Facilities. Traveling to and from the Marine Terminal is by crew boat and possibly helicopter and requires transfer by personnel basket to and from the deck.
The successful candidate will be required to work at LOOP’s Marine Terminal facility (offshore) and may be required to work or relocate to other facilities including Galliano, LA, St. James, LA, or Covington, LA.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist in continuous monitoring, operating, inspecting, and testing of all equipment, pipelines, storage tanks, and measurement systems.
- Actively participate in observation/intervention/Stop Work Authority program (SWA) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) programs.
- Be familiar with equipment designated as Safety Related Alarm (SRA) assets and comply with all maintenance policies and procedures when working on SRA assets.
- Assist in preventative maintenance execution, documentation, and follow up Work Order (WO) creation.
- Assist emergency repairs to limit and/or minimize interruptions to LOOP and its customers.
- Maintain required levels of training and certification according to LOOP and OSHA standards.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of and strictly adheres to LOOP safety and environmental requirements.
- Actively participate in observation/intervention/SWA program and sequential safety meetings.
- Assist in tag and lockout of various equipment and piping, issue permits & perform drain downs for Operations and/or Maintenance. Conducts pulling and loading of pipeline pigs and cleaning of meter strainers.
- Provide Operations relief to maintain and operate the LOCAP-St. James, Clovelly Hub, or Marine Terminal facility as needed once qualified.
- Conducts sampling of crude oil.
- Performs and maintains general housekeeping of work area including office, lab, building, and machinery.
- Record equipment repairs, history, and replacements in the LOOP Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Assist in maintenance on equipment and instruments as needed to maximize equipment availability.
Education:
Associate degree in a mechanical/ electrical field or equivalent from two-year college or technical certificate in related field preferred.
Experience:
Minimum three (3) years prior experience in and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Licensure/Certification:
OQ Task for Marine Terminal Utility Technician.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Essential Physical Requirements
This position routinely requires twelve-hour (12) days on a 7 day on and 7 days off schedule.
Employees must meet the physical standards expressed in the LOOP Occupational Health Assessment to be physically qualified to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a Utility Technician at LOOP Facilities.
