The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for a Utility Line Clearance Trimmer in Lansing, MI, as part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352.

Position Summary
Responsible for performing trimming or removal of trees and other vegetation near energized or de-energized overhead power lines using aerial lifts and/or manual climbing techniques.
Essential Functions
•Responsible for trimming or removal of trees and other vegetation; following the BWL Tree Trimming Policy.
•Properly uses and cares for of all tools and equipment required to perform job duties.
•Drives and operates an aerial lift bucket truck and large brush chipper.
•Must be willing and able to work standby rotation as required.
•Follows BWL safety manual and wears required personal protective equipment as required.
•Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL Utility Forester, BWL management, or government agency such as MIOSHA.
•Performs other duties as necessitated by job responsibilities.
•Must be willing to learn Microsoft Excel, Outlook, BWL Outage Management System, and SAP for keeping track of completed jobs and entering time.
Job Specifications
•High school diploma or equivalent.
•Two years minimum working as a Utility Line Clearance Trimmer for a utility.
•Must successfully obtain Arborist Certification and Michigan Pesticide Applicator Certification within 2 years of acceptance of position.
•Must possess a valid commercial pesticide applicator certification, as required or obtain one within 3 months of acceptance of position.
•Knowledge of BWL service area preferred.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
•Candidates must possess a valid Ml License with an acceptable driving record.
•Pass the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) examination within the first two months of hire, and the MI CDL skills/road test within the first six months.
•Internal applications must pass DOT physical exam and State of MI written portion of CDL examination within 15 days of transfer. It is preferred that Internal applicants possess a valid MI CDL with required endorsements.
•Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
•Must be able to lift and carry wood and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
•Sufficient visual acuity is essential for the operation of aerial bucket trucks, brush chippers, and other power-driven equipment.
•Work requires comfort with heights exceeding 75 feet and ability to access trees either manually or via bucket truck.
•Job functions require prolonged standing and frequent work above and below shoulder level.
•Must have the physical ability to climb, stoop, bend, twist, and other movements necessary for tree work.
•Outdoor temperature and humidity ranges.
•Noise and saw dust levels may be high at times when working at or above the ground.
•Must work in high traffic areas.
