The Utility Electrical Engineer (PE) is a licensed professional responsible for the design, analysis, and oversight of electrical systems and infrastructure that ensure safe, reliable, and efficient utility operations. This role leads the development of detailed engineering plans and specifications, performs advanced system studies, and provides expert technical guidance throughout project lifecycles. The Utility Electrical Engineer (PE) coordinates with project managers, construction teams, contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver high-quality solutions on time and within budget, while maintaining strict compliance with industry codes and safety standards.
· Prepare, review, and seal detailed electrical engineering drawings, specifications, and reports.
· Perform system modeling and analysis, including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and protection coordination studies.
· Develop designs for power distribution and transmission systems, substations, switchgear, and related infrastructure.
· Ensure all designs and construction documents comply with local, state, and federal codes and utility standards.
· Support project managers with cost estimates, schedules, and technical input during planning and execution phases.
· Oversee contractors and field teams during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
· Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and quality assurance for junior engineers and designers.
· Coordinate with regulatory agencies and local authorities to secure permits and approvals.
· Integrate renewable energy systems, smart grid technology, and other advanced solutions where applicable.
· Support continuous improvement of safety, sustainability, and reliability practices within utility operations.
· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
· Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan and ability to obtain Ohio license.
· Minimum 5 years of experience in utility electrical engineering, preferably in distribution and substation design.
· Proven experience preparing and sealing engineering documents.
· Strong working knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), NEC, IEEE, and other relevant standards.
· Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
· Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
