Job Purpose

Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) is a coordinated approach to energy system planning that considers community and customer energy needs and co-optimizes gas and electric network investments and customer electrification adoption throughout the Commonwealth. Massachusetts and its utilities are still in a pathfinding stage of IEP, exploring and defining its specific goals and how it will work in practice. The IEP Director leads National Grid’s collaboration with external stakeholders to drive alignment and clarity on innovative approaches to energy system planning. The IEP Director has responsibility for building the evolving, cross-functional IEP capability at the company by leading the establishment and execution of new processes and activities across electric, gas, customer, regulatory, and legal departments to ensure the development and implementation of robust planning tools, standards, compliance and processes to support regulatory, technical, and investment decision-making.


Key Accountabilities

- Acts as a thought leader on IEP, shaping future roadmaps, policy recommendations, and strategic direction and ensures consistent positions in all regulatory and public platforms

- Defines the capabilities needed across the Company to execute on IEP (people, process, data, technology) and the roadmap to build these capabilities

- Drives progress against the IEP roadmap, securing leadership buy-in and problem-solving with teams across different functions to build new capabilities, including the development of digital technologies.

- Leads all internal and external IEP-related engagement efforts, including internal governance and cross-functional leadership alignment and external coordination with peer utilities, the IEP Stakeholder Working Group, Grid Modernization Advisory Council (GMAC), and other key forums

- Provides strategic support and takes ownership for all IEP-related inputs for regulatory filings that require IEP contributions (e.g., bi-annual ESMP reporting)

- Ensures process and controls to adhere to data sharing compliance among utility operating companies

- Manages non-pipe alternative portfolio upon transition to the electric domain

- Contributes to the development and support of customer metrics used to assess and rank customer propensity to electrify

- Interfaces with Gas and Electric planning teams to evolve the study process including the development of software and digital tools needed to build IEP capabilities

- Uses insights from NPA and IEP pilots to shape the IEP capability build to and influence external stakeholders

- Supports capital authorization processes and regulatory filings, including testimony and permitting.


Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

- Demonstrable skills in stakeholder engagement and management strong communication and presentation skills collaborative working.


Qualifications

- Understanding of integrated energy planning across electric and gas systems.

- Strong leadership and team management skills.

- Experience with stakeholder management

- Demonstrated ability to influence and drive outcomes across cross-functional and external teams

- Familiarity with utility regulatory frameworks and network planning requirements.

- Bachelor’s Degree required.

- 7+ years of experience in energy network planning, operations, or policy/regulatory or related fields.

- Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional project management.

- Experience with regulatory testimony and filings and familiarity with electrification and decarbonization strategies desired.

- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy required.

Salary: $190,000 - $223,000
