About This Job

Role Overview: The Transmission System Planning Consultant (Contract) will assist with a range of studies and other consulting services to support power delivery utilities to make assessments backed by industry and engineering analysis. The Transmission System Planning Consultant will perform transmission planning studies consisting of transient stability, power flow, transfer capability, reliability, short-circuit, economic dispatch, and electromagnetic associated with congestion management scenarios.

This consultant will engage with various entities in the industry, including independent transmission providers, municipal electric utilities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned electric utilities.

The consultant will work with project managers to direct the technical execution of projects. The consultant will directly engage with clients to determine study goals, create project methodologies, and manage a team of consultants/engineers to meet the study objectives, providing our clients with practical and viable deliverables.


This role will be 100% remote.

Duties & Responsibilities: The consultant will support the project managers and direct portions of the project execution including analysis & engineering, staffing plan development deliverables, quality management and schedule. The consultant will assist and manage on-the-job and training efforts for less practiced team members. The consultant will assist the project manager in business development pursuits.


Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in an engineering field or related degree from an accredited program.
7+ years of experience, or Master's in Engineering with 2 years, of related experience associated with electric utility operations, planning, or consulting, or a PhD in Engineering with 1 year of related experience.
Understanding of transmission system planning processes and electric transmission systems
Familiarity with power system planning and operations; transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; NERC, FERC, and regional requirements, policies, and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; and harmonics analysis.
Software: Strong competency in industry software including PSS/E. Additional competency in TARA, Aspen, EasyPower, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, and PROMOD a plus.
Developed expertise to independently perform a transmission system planning study.
Experience developing study reports to document study assumptions and findings
Knowledge of NERC and FERC standards • Knowledge of power regions of the country and independent system operators such as: MISO, ERCOT, PJM, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, NYISO, NEISO
Demonstrated ability to provide independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
Strong organization, attention to detail, team building, collaboration, organization, and critical thinking skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership skills.
Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts in regards to renewable generation studies and design efforts.
Ability to work independently to solve difficult problems requiring modification and adaptation of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met
Ability to focus on priorities to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes
Capacity to perform under pressure and narrow deadlines
Ability to provide QA review of results and analysis
Enthusiasm to learn new services to support client needs and the market.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).
Ability to travel. Compensation Range Negotiable (Contract/Hourly)
