About The Role
This position is responsible for the management of design for assigned transmission generation tie lines for Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage, and for stand-alone transmission line projects. The Principal Engineer will develop, coordinate, and oversee transmission engineering related design activities as required to effectively serve our clients. This position is also responsible for day-to-day work assignments on a project-specific basis, reviewing engineers’ drawings, and solving design issues as required., and functions as department manager and provides organizational structure with roles and responsibilities to develop engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Responsible for managing the design of transmission line projects from conception (Early Stage) through construction and commissioning (Execution).
•The position requires candidate to work within a multi-disciplinary team for the design of transmission lines.
•Work closely with other Power Delivery departments, including Substation Engineering and Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering
•Responsible for handling multiple projects and providing a detailed design package that complies with applicable engineering design standards and all safety codes for use by technical staff, drafting personnel, clients, and contractors.
•Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
•Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
•Supports the technical and economic evaluation of transmission design studies.
•Review/supervise calculations, drawings, specifications, and perform condition assessments and feasibility studies.
•Preparing of proposals (technical scope, level of effort and cost estimates).
•Prepares engineering details and drawings and supports revision as required.
•Preparation of economic and operating feasibility studies and studies aimed at evaluating alternative systems, equipment, materials, or engineering methods.
•Prepares input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems. Utilizes computer for input and output of data and execution of stored programs.
•Performs analysis, design and development of standard details, drawings, specifications and transmission/substation facilities, structures, and foundations.
•Supports detailed technical analysis, planning studies and operational studies.
•Preparation of progress reports, compliance documentation and record-keeping of transmission technical documents and drawings.
•Mentor and guide other Engineering Professionals
•Undertake thought leadership activities and promote United Utility’s know-how in the Power and T&D sector in the region.
•Maintaining close coordination with other relevant United Utility Business Units and Practices for cross selling and cross staffing opportunities.
•Performs other duties as assigned or required.
•Ability to travel up to 20% within North America.
Key Qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of direct experience in the development, design, engineering, and construction of High Voltage Transmission line projects.
• Must have a strong knowledge of transmission design, excellent communication and project management skills, a bias for action, proven analytical and problem-solving skills, and an ability to provide value engineering and ensure design quality.
• Requires technical competence such as the ability to understand one line and three-line diagrams, general arrangements, plan and profiles, and other common deliverables. Familiarity with utility industry standards and practices to include NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
• Requires coordination with other groups to ensure the projects are successful. Generally responsible for assigned projects, including presentations/briefing on current progress, issues, and risk mitigation in meetings with various levels of management.
• Supervise a team of engineering professionals as a project leader. Makes independent decisions which are not regularly subject to technical review.
• Results driven with strong planning & organizational skills, delegation, conflict management, and ability to build effective teams.

Hybrid work setup is preferred. General office working conditions. On-site inspection duties involving occasional overnight travel. Occasional travel to locations for meetings with clients, vendors, and equipment suppliers may be required. Work outside regular schedule may be required.
