The Central Power Station (CPS) supplies all electrical power to the Prudhoe Bay Unit oil field. CPS is hiring for the position of CPS T&D Relay Technician. This position is based on the North Slope of Alaska, working a two weeks on, two weeks off schedule (2/2). This position works twelve (12) hour shifts. This is a represented position by the USW local 4959.
Primary duties include:* Proficiently using hand tools, power tools, meters and other test equipment in energized substations to install, maintain, repair and program protective relays and associated wiring and equipment.
•Applies, reads, understands, reviews and corrects schematic, wiring diagram blueprints and substation drawings and inspections.
•Proficiently operate various test equipment and exercises all safe work practices
•Coordinates testing, troubleshooting and repairs of relaying and other equipment with other department personnel.
•Performs maintenance on and testing of relays and associated equipment, batteries, chargers, standby generators and display meters.
•Troubleshoots, repairs and replaces components involved in questionable operations and failures.
•Updates relay settings as needed by transmission and substation improvements.
•Be available in emergency callout rotation. Performs other duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.
•Maintenance and development of skills and competency, knowledge and understanding of controls, basic relay operation and trouble shooting skills are required
•Basic knowledge and understanding of control and protection circuitry associated with high voltage equipment such as oil filled breakers, gas filled breakers and oil filled transformers.
•Work closely with the engineering department to develop solutions, and implement corrective measures as assigned.
•Understand the different philosophies associated with all types of protection and control applications.
•Strong understanding of safe work practices and isolation of all types of relay equipment for repair and modification.
•Experience in the installation and commissioning of various types of relay equipment
Secondary duties include:* Experience with oil and gas circuit breakers, oil filled transformers, capacitor banks and various other electrical apparatus used in an electrical utility setting.
•Working with the other high voltage substation technicians and linemen on Medium/Low voltage equipment within the power system.
•Assist with the commissioning of substation and power line installations.
•Working with in-plant generation and control equipment at both CPS/EOA Power Plants including 135VDC to 13.8KV equipment as well as water washing of high voltage system insulators, safety escorts of high loads, high voltage transformer and circuit breaker maintenance/repairs, drill rig MV hook-ups/disconnects
•Proficient in switching of high and medium voltage equipment for both planned and unplanned outages.
•Have the ability to assist with the operation and Maintenance of eight (8) Standby generators comprised of gas turbines and diesel reciprocating units operating at voltages to 4.16KV
•Perform Preventative and Electrical Maintenance within the CPS power system
•Operation of man lifts and other heavy equipment.
•Read, understand and comply with all Company and Departmental policies and procedures.
•Participate in the development, writing and review of required procedures.
Essential Education / Job Experience* A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
•5+ years of experience as an industrial technician in the electrical, petro-chemical or power industry
•Work experience in electrical utilities in arctic conditions and oil field environments is desirable
Desirable criteria and qualifications* Experience in power plant operations, generation with associated equipment, excitation systems, maintenance, and troubleshooting of low/medium voltage switchgears
•Experience in servicing and testing of dry type and oil-filled power transformers
•Experience in servicing and testing of SF-6 Gas and oil-filled circuit breakers
