Job Description
The Survey Party Chief will evaluate assigned field survey projects, manage the field survey team, prepare, process and coordinate the required field survey work while maintaining daily survey logs based on client’s intent/vision, budget, timeline, jurisdictional requirements and concerns.
The Survey Party Chief leads a field survey crew engaged in conducting geodetic surveys for construction, topographic maps, right-of-way exhibits, and control survey networks; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors work, providing input for evaluation of the field survey crew; is the senior field surveyor in boundary determination, data collection, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Direct and perform daily field surveying operations in urban, rural, commercial, industrial and construction site locations both local to California and across the Western United States.
•Accurate preparation of surveying calculations, daily field notes, sketches, time sheets and various survey reports according to directions provided by clients and management.
•Direct and complete field surveys for boundary determination, design plans, utility locating, hydrographic maps, right-of-way cross-sections, as-builts, and other survey exhibits as directed.
•Interpret and lay-out construction staking from provided calculations along with field adjustments as required to meet the demands of the client and the working environment.
•Evaluate engineering design plans for construction purposes and provide concise communication to the client and management team regarding any conflicts, blunders, and other complications as needed.
•Sets up, operates, and adjusts all types of survey equipment, including a digital level, total station, laser scanner, RTK GPS receivers/base, long-range radios, and other electronic measuring devices.
•Conduct county research of existing survey, deed, and improvement records on-line and in-person as required to complete boundary retracements and monumentation surveys.
•Organize and maintain field books, reports, maintenance data, survey equipment and company vehicles.
•Take an active part in the company safety culture presenting ideas on improvement where possible along with supervision of the safety procedures for all crew members working on the site together.
•Trains and assists junior crew members on the correct procedures and latest technology in surveying equipment along with finding new and innovative ways of doing land surveys.
•Air and/or car travel to project sites that require over-night accommodations provided by GSI.
•Although most work occurs during daytime hours, some projects require night work.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
•This job has supervisory responsibilities.
•Directly supervises 1 or more employees assigned to the daily field survey crew.
•Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
•Responsibilities include training employees; planning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems and/or quality issues.
Qualifications and Skills:
•Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and basic understanding of math and geometry
•Two (2) or more years of experience in leading a field survey crew to conduct various kinds of surveys
•Land-Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certification or equivalent is preferred
•Knowledge of the principles, practices, regulations, and techniques in the field of land surveying
•Experience using a personal computer to complete tasks like email, spreadsheets and data downloads
•Skilled in both verbal and written communication along with excellent time management skills
•Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
•Frequently/Continually required to stand and walk in uneven terrain
•Frequently/Continually required to travel (sit) including drive-time to/from/between sites
•Frequently/Continually required to utilize hand dexterity, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl
•Frequently/Continually work around traffic, automobile fumes, airborne dust, construction debris, etc.
•Frequently/Continually exposed to outside weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind)
•Occasionally lift and /or move more than 50 pounds and work in high, precarious places
•Occasionally exposed to raw sewer and untreated storm water
•General good health, fitness, vision & hearing are required to perform all aspects of this job
•Required to utilize tools such as pry bars, hammers, rulers, concrete drills and other hand tools
•Environmental conditions such as public roadways and construction sites will include exposure to heavy equipment and vehicles traveling in excess of 40 miles an hour
