Are you in? Primary Purpose:

Under direct supervision regularly and customarily performs work in substations involving testing, maintenance and repair of all types of equipment used in the distribution, regulation, switching and transformation of electrical energy. Also performs the construction, installation and wiring of all substation equipment. This includes such work as the following illustrative duties, together with other related and incidental work. In addition to the primary duties and other related work of similar grade, a Substation Technician will be assigned to any other work of equal or lesser skill within the capabilities of the individual, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.


Primary Duties:

Assists in installing all relays and protective equipment, including supervisory or carrier current relay equipment, all control circuits, control equipment, power circuit breakers, voltage regulators, transformers, reclosers, switches, capacitors, lightning arresters, batteries, battery chargers and other related equipment, either dead or energized, owned or serviced by the Company.

Performs or assists in performance of: checking, setting, maintaining, testing, adjusting, and repairing power circuit breakers, voltage regulators, transformers, reclosers, switches, capacitors, lightning arresters, and other related equipment. This includes testing, filtering and replacing of insulating oil, painting, piping work, incidental construction, and other construction and electrical work associated with the structures, bus, conductors, and foundations.
Performs or assists in performance of: assembling, erecting, installing, inspecting and maintaining substation structures, bus, conductors, switches, foundations, and associated equipment required in substation areas. This includes conduit work, excavating, concrete and concrete form work, assisting in incidental cutting and welding and work of an allied nature.
Assists in the operation of complex equipment necessary to obtain data to analyze, to identify, locate and repair all types of underground cables and cable faults.
Renders assistance to other Company departments in general problems dealing with the devices stated in Items 1, 2 and 3.
Assists in interpreting all electrical and related diagrams and schematics. Assists in the preparation of field schematic, wiring and physical diagrams as required.
Assists in the installation of substation metering equipment.
May render assistance to contractors or customers in the testing and maintenance of privately-owned electrical equipment.
Directs the work of and instructs others assigned to assist him.
Performs or assists in performance of: repairing, painting and maintaining street lighting system apparatus, cables and conduits.
Assists Engineers in making studies and calculations and may make simple calculations and studies as directed.
Performs necessary clerical work incidental to the job.
Operates automotive equipment with appropriate license/endorsements and all required construction equipment.

Job Scope:

Minimum Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must be able to pass test prior to Company awarding job. Employee must be able to pass a qualifying test at the end of six months and must be able to pass progression tests at the end of 21/2, 41/2 and 61/2 years. Failure to pass tests will require remaining at the existing step with employee eligible for retesting within six months. Failure to pass the test a second time will result in the employee being reassigned as follows: - An employee promoted or transferred into this classification shall be reassigned as if he had failed to meet the job requirements as addressed under Article 3, Section 5(b). - An employee hired into this classification (not promoted or transferred) shall be placed in an existing bargaining unit position vacancy at any location for which the Company deems he is qualified, unless during a thirty (30) day period the employee is awarded another position through the bidding process.

Educational requirements: High School diploma or equivalent.
Must possess or be able to promptly obtain the appropriate vehicle operator's license/endorsements.
Must have good health and must be able to walk, stand, reach, stoop, perform heavy lifting and climbing, in order to perform strenuous work.
Must be capable of taking sufficient training to meet the full requirements of the job or must have had other training or experience equally acceptable to this Company and must be able to demonstrate such skills by successfully completing a Company-developed test program.
Must possess considerable degree of skill or acumen in order to regularly perform routine work by following detailed instructions.
Must become familiar with the installation, maintenance and operation of all relays and protective equipment, all control circuits and equipment, voltage regulators, transformers, and other related equipment in distribution systems and substations owned or serviced by the Company.
Must be able to exercise judgment acceptable to the Company in matters of relatively minor importance and narrow scope.
Must be qualified to occasionally direct others helping on the same work.
Must become thoroughly familiar with the Company's electrical switching and tagging rules and grounding procedure and equipotential zone procedures.
Must be willing and able to work extra and/or irregular hours and be willing to work under unusual or special conditions.
Must become and remain thoroughly familiar with the Company's safety rules applicable to this and related jobs. Must become capable of applying resuscitation and be able to render practical first aid.
Dress: Clothing should contain no exposed metal components when working on or near uncovered energized structures or equipment. May not wear flowing garments or garment components while working on or near rotating equipment, or on structures, poles, or equipment which requires climbing above eye level. Must keep hair cut short or closely bound while at work. Must wear required protective equipment at all times.
Must pass NERC background Check.
Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime.
Reads, writes and communicates effectively in English language.
Ability to distinguish different color-coded wires.
Ability to lift and carry 70 pounds.

Hourly rates will be paid in accordance with terms of the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience or collective bargaining agreement: $29.68/Hr.
