SUMMARY
Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) Canada is a Canadian subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy focused on identifying and investing in business opportunities related to all aspects of the energy infrastructure market across Canada. BHE Canada currently owns and operates a 130 MW wind farm, a 20 MW natural gas-fired power plant, and a high voltage transmission line in Alberta. BHE Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.
An opportunity exists for a Stakeholder Engagement and Permitting Lead on the Project Development team within BHE Canada to develop meaningful, transparent relationships with stakeholders across Alberta’s power industry to ensure the successful development of new electricity power generation (renewable and non-renewable), energy storage, and other strategic projects. This role will be key in building trust, credibility and support, and ensuring alignment between corporate goals and the interests of landowners, communities, government agencies, regulators, industry groups, and the general public.
Key Accountabilities:
•Reporting to the Manager of Project Development and Customer Service, key accountabilities are to:
•Develop and implement comprehensive stakeholder engagement plans aligned with regulatory, community, and business objectives;
•Identify, engage, and manage relationships with First Nations, government agencies, community groups, industry partners, and the general public;
•Build long-term relationships with diverse stakeholder groups;
•Plan and facilitate consultation, town halls, workshops, and one-on-one meetings;
•Document and report stakeholder input, concerns, and expectations; ensure timely and appropriate responses;
•Monitor issues, risks, and emerging trends that may impact stakeholder relationships or project execution;
•Collaborate across internal departments to integrate stakeholder feedback into project development and corporate decision making;
•Prepare briefings, presentations, and reports for internal and external audiences, including executive leadership;
•Ensure compliance with regulatory and legal consultation requirements;
•Support Project Development activities such as environmental reviews, siting/land considerations, landowner engagement (among others) from inception through to permit and license;
•Leadership, execution, and accountability of stakeholder engagement strategies across a variety of projects through to permit and license;
•Support development of project execution plans, budgets, and schedules for various energy projects;
•Support government funding applications, as applicable, for new projects including but not limited to: Emission Reduction Alberta, NRCan Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program;
Qualifications:
•University degree in political science, public relations, communications, environmental studies or related discipline;
•Minimum of 10 years of experience in stakeholder engagement, community relations, or public affairs;
•Experience in energy industry is an asset;
•Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
•Demonstrated ability to initiate and engage with diverse communities and manage sensitive conversations
•Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is an asset;
•Capability to critically assess environmental, safety, land, regulatory or other critical project components and effectively engage third-party contractors/consultants to support review;
•Excellent project management and organization skills to manage relationships on multiple projects simultaneously;
•Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment and positively influence others;
•Demonstrated skills in negotiation, conflict management, and communication of complex concepts;
•Comfortable in reviewing and managing contracts/agreements;
•Comfortable working in a dynamic changing environment with multiple, occasionally conflicting, priorities;
•Valid Class 5 drivers license;
•A demonstrated commitment to safety;
•Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
